Self-isolation during the coronavirus pandemic has made people realize that socialization is not something we should take for granted, and that keeping in touch with those around us is crucial for staying mentally healthy during this unprecedented crisis.

Sian Cosgrove of Leeds had been living in her house with her boyfriend for a year, but they never happened to talk to their neighbors living opposite their house.

So, when the lockdown happened, and they kept seeing the neighbors’ cat sitting by the window, Cosgrove decided that it would be a good idea to ask what the name of the cat was.

“Me and my partner had been calling him Eric because we didn’t know his name, but he was always sat in the window looking majestic,” Cosgrove told the Daily Mail. “It was annoying me that we didn’t know his name but we see him every day (all day every day now we’re in lock down) so I asked!”

But how could she ask them if they couldn’t meet in person due to the quarantine? Well, she had a brilliant idea. She wrote her message on a piece of paper and put it up on her window. She didn’t really expect her question to be answered, but she really did it because she didn’t have anything to lose.

And then, the answer came posted on the neighbors’ window as well. This encouraged Cosgrove to continue the conversation, this time making a compliment about the cat.

Cosgrove was so excited about her new friend that she shared their messages on Twitter, getting more than 750,000 likes on the original post. This made the woman very happy and, as she explains, it has helped her through the lockdown so far.

“Feeling part of a community has felt huge for me while we’re in lockdown,” she said.

And, indeed, soon after her Twitter post, her timeline was flooded with pictures from proud pet owners. This is the community Cosgrove is talking about. Having so many people react to your post makes lockdown days more meaningful.

Now Walter even has his own Instagram account. There, they share advice from the “indoor cat” about how to spend quarantine days creatively at home. What are some of their suggestions? “Lick plastic bags all over the house, particularly in the middle of the night” or “try out new places to sit that don’t look like they would be at all comfortable, like laptop keyboards or important paperwork.”

Sian made sure to let her neighbors know that their cat is now Twitter famous and she is to blame, but we’re sure they have no problem with that! What’s not to love about being a celebrity anyway! Walter would definitely enjoy it if he could understand the situation.
