Woman reunites with quick-thinking police officer who saved her from abuse when she was a child

Most of the time, we go about our lives not thinking about the sheer impact of one good deed.

It might just be a little act of compassion for some, to others, it can be a lifeline that can change their lives for the better.

More than 20 years ago, in Kansas City, Missouri, a little girl had to endure a life of struggle. Klynn Scales lived with her brothers in a house of drug addiction and neglect. They weren’t eating well and their needs were not being met. This forced Klynn to steal food from the local 7-11 store just to feed her siblings.

In her uphill battle to overcome abuse, she met a police officer named Jeffrey Colvin.

Colvin shared that Scales was not hard to miss as she was energetic despite the conditions she had to live in. He remembers Scales waving to him while on duty.

“He was like my best friend. I remember him bringing us candy sometimes. You know kids. We love candy,” Scales shared to KCTV.

But more than just sweets, Colvin gave them the support they needed. Scales felt that he was the only person who cared about them.

“First question after school every day was, ‘How did you do at school today? What did you learn?’” Scales recalled.

These interactions eventually led to a friendship, and that friendship led to a promise.

Colvin swore that he would always check on her. But little did he know that this promise will save Scale’s life.

When he heard Scales’s address announced via dispatch for a children’s division call, Colvin rushed to the home and found an unconscious Scales. She was weak and pale. They rushed her to the hospital and there they knew that she was suffering from severe malnutrition. The incident could’ve been fatal, but thanks to a friend who kept his promise, Scales was given a new lease on life. After that, she and her brothers were placed in state custody.

That would be the last time they’d see each other.

But in late 2015, the Kansas City Police Department received a call. She claimed that she lived there when she was young and that she knew an officer named “Colvin”. Sgt. Jennifer Jones helped the caller locate the officer, and arranged the reunion of Scales and Colvin.

“Most times we go through our career not realizing we truly helped anybody out,” Colvin explained in an interview with FOX. “That was the case with me where I wondered if I was even in the right career path.”

Now a mother herself, Scales asked Colvin another promise.

Colvin kept that promise and drove all the way to Galveston, Texas where he pinned Scales’s badge. She graduated from the police academy with hopes that she could follow in her hero’s footsteps.

“He’s the one who makes me want to be like him. I want to be a Jeff Colvin to another child or even an adult,” Scales said to KCTV.

It was a commitment she’s intending to keep.

She met a paramedic in Texas who was also rescued by their hero. The paramedic also lived a life of abuse and neglect. Together, they’re planning to start a non-profit to help children who are in the same situation as they once did.
