These rainbow succulents are the colorful plants you need right now

If you haven’t jumped on the succulent trend yet, it’s time to catch up! These underrated plants are incredibly low-maintenance, so they take basically no work on your part, and they just so happen to look beautiful in a completely understated way.

We’ve seen all sorts of succulents cropping up on our Instagram feeds since quarantine has had us working on our homes and gardens like never before. While there have been some pretty cool plants to obsess over, none have quite caught our attention like these rainbow succulents.

They look as if their leaves have been painted or tie dyed, but this is actually the totally natural color of the plants. What’s special about them is that no rainbow succulent sub-species of its kind is quite the same, as they all have different color shades in different patterns on their leaves.

You can find rainbow succulents in beautiful shades of pink, lilac, green, grey and amber. Some of them look like sunsets, while others look like your favorite pastel combo of ice cream flavors. They tend to resemble roses in appearance, though some are much bigger than others.

Choose between larger succulents with just one “flower”, or succulents with lots of tiny colorful “flowers” to enjoy. The most enjoyable thing about this pant is that it changes color with the seasons, so you never quite know what you’re going to end up with when you buy one.

Speaking of buying one, Etsy is a fantastic place to look for rainbow succulents. There are a number of succulent sellers on there who specifically grow, look after and sell on a variety of rare succulents, including rainbow succulents.

There are even some Etsy sellers who offer “mystery box” rainbow succulents, which is a great idea if you like to be surprised or you’re looking for a gift for a friend. If you’re more select with your preferences, there are more than enough options for you too. Just be warned – you probably won’t check out with only the one purchase you had in mind!

You need to look after rainbow succulents in the same way that you would with a normal succulent. Give them plenty of sunlight and rotate them frequently to prevent leaning.

In the spring and summer, when your plants are thriving, make sure to give them more water to aid their growth. With that said, it’s essential that you don’t over-water your succulent – they require less water than the average pot plant to survive. A good test is to prod your finger into the soil. If you find that the top 1 to 2 inches is dry, it’s time to give them a water.

If you’re not sure whether you can handle a succulent, we assure you that you can. You don’t even need to have a large back yard, or even a tiny patio or a window box, as succulents can survive and thrive indoors. Providing you position your rainbow succulents close to a window that lets in sunlight, you will be absolutely fine.

Rainbow succulents can really add to your decor, especially if you’re going for a minimalist theme with well-chosen color pops. There’s plenty of creativity to be had with this plant, so what are you waiting for? It’s time to get succulent shopping!
