Meet Rambo, the tiny stray puppy who became a protector of the Ukrainian troops

Despite the heartbreaking news between Ukraine and Russia, one group of Ukrainian soldiers has found an incredibly inspiring morale booster.

Rambo is a tiny stray dog that was adopted by Ukrainian servicemen.

In a viral video posted online, soldiers introduced the new member of the unit – who they had (aptly) named Rambo. Rambo is a stray dog found on the streets during the invasion. The poor puppy was alone and freezing cold, so the soldiers decided to take him in,

“We felt sorry for him. It was freezing outside,” the soldiers explained to the camera. “We took him into our post, and he stayed with us.”

Wagging his tail, Rambo is clearly super proud to meet his new family.

“He is our security. That is his job,” a soldier told the camera.

Rambo may be the smallest soldier, but he still has a commanding presence.

No wonder the soldiers refer to him as their protector. Rambo’s main job is to watch and listen if somebody is nearby. He would “stand guard” outside their post and watch over the men.

“He can hear very well if there is a stranger nearby,” one soldier said while another agreed, saying: “Rambo is doing a good job! Best doggo.”

Based on SCMP, Rambo is not the only puppy who was adopted and became a valuable companion for the soldiers.

A 21-year-old Ukrainian soldier named Mykyta explained how his troop had also adopted a stray dog in the muddy trench of Avdiivka.

They were simply petting the dog when the troops decided to adopt her – and now, she has become a valued asset on the frontline.

“She immediately barks or growls if the enemy is planning an attack. It’s safer and calmer with her – no wonder they say that a dog is man’s best friend,” Mykyta said in an interview with SCMP.

An AFP journalist has stated that roughly fifteen dogs have taken up residence with the soldiers in the trenches.

“The animals aren’t to blame – the war is,” said 49-year-old soldier Volodymyr “They were abandoned. They had to fend for themselves. We have to feed them.”

Most of these animals were former pets who were left behind when refugees rushed to leave the country.

Abandoned to fend for themselves, these pets found solace in the care and love of the soldiers. But, as mentioned, it’s obvious the soldiers benefit from this connection as well.

In fact, some of these soldiers ended up taking these pets home.

From stray animals to loving guardians of soldiers, these canines definitely found a new home for themselves.

But dogs aren’t the only animals who have proved to be of use on the battlefield. One soldier named Dmytro recounted his experiences with a black cat named Chernukha.

“When winter came, field mice were running around the dugouts.”

“She caught them all within two months.”
