Need to change up your pizza strategy? Try these easy bite-sized snacks in an ice tray

We know there are some people out there who don’t like pizza or have cut it out of their diets for health reasons, but the overwhelming majority of us are still willing to indulge. And with kids now home more often than ever, now’s the time to step up your pizza game and make it interesting.

Even pizza-lovers can get food fatigue sometimes, but making it in a different form can help cure the boredom. (Of course, if you’re eating the stuff 7 days a week, you really should think about diversifying your diet!)

Anyway, on to the point! Let’s make some pizza rolls!

Now, if you’re exhausted after a long day of listening to everyone ask you for things, throw in those frozen ones from the store! There’s no shame in that.

But if you enjoy your time in the kitchen, use it to relax, or even find that it’s the only time you get to yourself, there’s a way to get a bit more elaborate AND sate everyone’s need for pizza. And better yet, you can even cater to different taste buds with this recipe.

The kids can even help if you need an activity!

Of course, you’ll need some prepared pizza dough for this, but that’s really the only “tough” part.

Start by gathering the following ingredients and tools:

  • Pizza dough (you can find an easy recipe here)
  • Pizza sauce (the amount will depend on how many you’re making)
  • Cheese
  • Toppings such as pepperoni bits, mushrooms, peppers, onions (the sky’s the limit!)
  • A bit of flour
  • An ice cube tray
  • Parchment paper (oiled tin foil will work fine too)
  • A baking sheet
  • A pizza wheel (though a knife will be sufficient if you don’t have one)

Now, preheat your oven to 350 degrees and let’s get to work.

Step 1:

Cut your pizza dough in half.

One piece will serve as the bottom layer and the other as the top cover.

Step 2:

Now, flatten the dough into two rectangles a few inches larger than your ice cube tray.

You’ll want the dough that goes into the tray first to be thick enough so that you can make indents in it without creating holes.

Step 3:

Next, get your ice cube tray out.

And don’t worry, you aren’t going to bake it!

Just make sure that if your pizza dough is sticky that you put a bit of flour into the bottom of each well.

Now lay your first piece of dough on top of the tray.

Then, take your fingers and gently press the dough into the tray to create pockets for your fillings.

Step 4:

Prep your fillings.

Of course, it doesn’t have to be this neat, but you’ll want to be able to grab what you need easily.

This is where the fun part for kids comes in as well. They can either get their own ice tray or else choose fillings for a few of their pizza rolls.

This is what your ice tray will look like when it’s complete – each divot will have its own set of fillings.

Step 5:

Take the second piece of dough and lay it over the filled ice cube tray.

Be sure to trim the edges, especially since it can provide you with more dough for the next round!

Step 6:

Remember, you can’t put a plastic ice tray in the oven!

Get out your baking sheet and grease it or line it with parchment paper.

Then, turn over the tray and, theoretically, the dough will pop right out since you floured it.

Here’s what it should look like when you pop it out onto your baking sheet.

Step 7:

Take a pizza wheel and separate all of the pizza rolls.

Then, move them apart on the baking sheet so they have room to puff up without touching one another.

Step 8:

Now bake the rolls in a 350-degree oven for 15-20 minutes, checking on them at the 13-15 minute mark to be sure they’re getting golden but not burning or oozing cheese.

Finally, allow them to cool for 5-10 minutes and then plate them with a side of sauce!

Just look at these beauties!
