Least visited deaf dog at shelter is certain she’s going to be returned again after she’s rehomed

There are millions of dogs and cats in shelters waiting to be rescued.

Approximately 3.1 million dogs enter shelters every year and 2 million are adopted among these dogs.

Sadly, about 390,000 dogs are euthanized in shelters each year, due to overcrowding, illness, or severe injury with poor prognosis.

Fortunately, one special deaf dog was adopted, even if he was among the dogs least visited at the shelter.

While living in San Francisco, partners Mark and Sean were looking for a deaf dog in the area, and they found two at Family Dog Rescue.

One of them was Blu, a deaf pit bull.

“When Blu walked into the room we were allowed to meet her, she was just so vibrant and full of life,” Sean told GeoBeats Animals.

She took a strong affinity towards Sean, which began their close relationship until today.

Blu is the fourth deaf dog Mark has had.

He’s always loved his deaf, which is why they were looking specifically for a deaf dog.

Her original owner reached out to Mark and Sean and told them Blu’s story.

She lived with her former owner’s family for six years.

Unfortunately, they lost the home that they owned, and they had to move to a rental.

This is when they had to bring Blu to a shelter, because most rentals are not open to accepting pit bulls.

Blu was one of the longest staying residents at the shelter until Mark and Sean brought her home.

“It took a while for her to kind of get comfortable around us, because she didn’t know if we were going to send her back to the shelter or what our plan was,” Sean shared.

Mark said she just stared at them for a long time.

Even a supposed fun car trip to the beach was nerve-wracking for Blue.

Her dads said she was petrified and shaking in the back of the car.

Today, three years later, Blu is completely comfortable around them and loves car rides.

After she got comfortable around them, her personality bloomed.

Sean calls her his “spirit animal.”

“I know when she’s anxious, and happy and sad, we just read each other very well,” Sean said.

They have also developed their own communication style. Blu’s deafness doesn’t hinder their communication with each other in any way.

When Sean moves in a certain direction, Blu knows exactly where he’s going, even without hearing any verbal cues or commands.

When they go on walks, Blu sniffs his feet to tell which direction they are heading.

Blu also knows that Sean is mad when he gives her stern looks, while finger wiggles mean she’s behaving and being good.

Her dads also know that stretching with her helps her calm down when she’s anxious.

“She’s got a fear of missing out, so she just wants to be near you, but she doesn’t always want to be touched,” Sean shared further.

He also said that moving forward, he will always want to have a deaf dog because they’re so unique and special.

You can tell immediately that Blu is thrilled with her second family.

Her dads love her very much and we are certain the feeling is mutual.
