Rescue dog gets new forever family – but takes 97-day walk back to his beloved foster mom

Dogs have a way of melting our hearts in ways we cannot imagine. As fiercely loyal creatures, this one pup sure takes the cake.

Zelda, a six-year-old German shepherd mix managed to find her foster mama 30 miles away from her adopted family.

Zelda first arrived at the Wags and Whiskers rescue from an overflowing shelter in Texas. Like many shelters, a lot of dogs end up being fostered to free up space to save more dogs.

Zelda stayed with Seneca Krueger. Krueger is known for her foster skills as she has fostered roughly 30 to 40 dogs previously.

We personally cannot imagine how tough it would be to take care of and let go of that many dogs.

Zelda was with Krueger for just 7 months. At that time, Zelda found her bark and became a true dog again.

After her 7 months, she had progressed enough to find a forever home.

A family 30 miles from Krueger loved Zelda and decided to bring her home permanently, or so they thought.

It turns out, Krueger was missing Zelda quite a bit. She told Kare 11, “Out of 30, 40 foster dogs, what happens is you love them, and then you let them go and you take the next one. And with Zelda, I adopted her out and spent three days crying. I felt like I had lost my dog.”

It turns out Zelda wasn’t digging her new home either as she left after about 10 days.

Once Krueger was notified of Zelda’s escape, she decided to join the search committee.

“Three times a week I was out for four or five hours,” she said to Kare 11. “The days where it was 30 below were the days I was most worried about her. I was out all day trying to find her so that she could be warm.”

Social media was buzzing with photo sightings of Zelda but she simply couldn’t be caught. That’s when Krueger bought on Niki Taylor and Kathy Brunner with START for Dogs, an organization comprised of all volunteers who search for lost pets.

After a few weeks, the leads went cold and the photos stopped.

Brunner told Kare 11, “We thought she could be in the lake and didn’t make it.”

51 days after Zelda’s escape, a photo popped up.

The START team contacted Krueger to share the news.

It turns out, Zelda had made her way back into the neighborhood of Krueger. She was just two blocks away, somewhere.

In early May, Zelda wandered into the alley behind Mike and Susan Willis’ home.

“I just started feeding her right away,” Susan Willis says with a smile to Kare 11, “because that’s what Susan’s do. They feed.”

Sounds like Zelda made the right choice. The women from START arranged to set a trap for Zelda with some food placed inside a cage.

Once captured, Krueger got a call at 4:34 AM to come and confirm it was indeed Zelda.

While Zelda looked a little different after spending 97 days on the road and traveling 30 miles, she had made it back to Krueger safely.

Naturally, Krueger adopted Zelda and the former adopted family was happy to give her over.

Sometimes, the dog chooses the person.

We can all be thankful for this happy ending.
