Goofy rescue dog wins hearts over ribbons with hilarious attempt at agility course

Baron Kratu von Bearbum, or just Kratu, is a rescue dog from Romania. He has become internet famous thanks to his memorable, albeit not entirely impressive, appearances at the Crufts dog show.

Kratu seems to enjoy the obstacle course very much, even if he clearly doesn’t understand the rules of the competition.

Rescued to become a service assistance dog.

Kratu was just a few weeks old when he was rescued from Cluj-Napoca, Romania. The dog’s British adopter is an autistic woman named Tessa Eagle Swan who trained him to be her service dog. In an interview she would give to Bustle, she spoke about how Kratu has been able to help her.

“Kratu succeeds where the system fails me… Where I was isolated, lost, and lonely, he has brought companionship. Motivation to look after him and his welfare makes me face my issues and get through them as his wellbeing is vital to me.”

Kratu runs the “course of agility”

In 2017, Eagle Swan entered Kratu into the Crufts dog show. They represented the Wood Green charity at the event. Kratu’s apathy towards following the rules of the course became a big hit with spectators and commentators. Footage of Kratu from the 2018 show went viral and he has been something of an internet celebrity ever since.

In an interview she would later give to Slate, Eagle Swan describes how she first entered Kratu into the competition.

“We do training with a charity called Wood Green, so because we train with them, we were invited to be on the team. I said, ‘We can’t do agility,’ but they said, ‘It’s just a basic course and it’s fun.’ The whole point of this is to show that rescue dogs and their owners can have fun.”

Kratu wins hearts but not competition.

“He’s trying to do a course and he doesn’t care very much what he’s actually supposed to do,” a commentator said during Kratu’s run around the course.

Kratu sort of runs the course in the same way we would imagine any untrained dog would. Instead of following the predetermined route around the course, Kratu just runs wherever his little heart desires. If he wants to sit inside the tube for a little while, then Kratu is going to sit inside the tube.

“The point is we want the dogs to have fun here and we don’t care if they get it right or not,” the commentator said. “There is actually a proper route that they are supposed to take and Kratu is not taking it… is all I can say.”

Everybody loves Kratu

Kratos performances from the dog show have gone viral on YouTube. His 2019 performance has been viewed over 1.8 million times. Many viewers were so “impressed” with Kratu’s performance that they felt compelled to leave a comment on the video.

“Definitely an emotional support dog. My mood is much better after watching,” wrote one viewer.

“I so love how the announcers aren’t mad but just love that the dog enjoys what he’s doing!” wrote another.

“Kratu is the embodiment of “do what you like, like what you do” and I love him.”

Kratu might not be the best at running the agility course, but he seems to really enjoy it and in the end, isn’t that all that matters?
