Rescue leaves public note for owner that abandoned their dog outside shelter
Animal shelters get a whole lot of animals on the regular. Pets who’ve been abandoned, animals found on streets, or pets who got lost or separated from their families.
It’s really hard to guess the circumstances behind every animal that ends up there.
Jumping to conclusions is as unwise as it can get.
In this dog’s case, we all get to see why it’s unwise to pass judgement on someone we don’t know.
Sweet Home Doberman rescue received a precious German Shepherd, Delilah, at their doorstep.
German Shepherds don’t just end up as strays.
These are purebred dogs, and no one would just give up a German Shepherd for no reason.
Delilah’s anonymous owner had to leave a little note with her. It was a remorseful letter that told the shelter most of what they needed to know.
“My name is Delilah. Please find me a new home. I like my food mixed with lean or wet food, and 2/3 cups of hard food. Thank you.”
The shelter knew something was off.
This was no family that just hastily gave up their beloved dog. In that note, there was a clear air of remorse and unwillingness to leave the dog.
It might not be explicit in the note, but anyone with an eye and ear for context could tell.
So, they wrote a note back to Delilah’s owner, in hopes of comforting them wherever they may be.
“We are not here to judge you. That is not our place. We do not know your story and can only imagine the turmoil in your heart when faced with the decision you had to make “
Perhaps Delilah’s owner had to go off to college, lost their job, or had to work overseas with no one to look after her. The list of possibilities goes on, and the shelter was clear in their understanding of the situation.
“We are not here to judge you. That is not our job. We know there must be so many fond memories and happy times spent together. Endless kisses and hugs. Sharing your secrets knowing they would be safe. A lifetime of love that never lasts long enough.”
They assured them that Delilah was in safe hands, and they needn’t worry. Every word of comfort probably went a long way.
“We are not here to judge you. That is not who we are. Right now you are probably wondering if she safe and loved. Right now you are probably wondering if she is warm and fed. Right now you are probably wondering where she will spend her days. “
Now that Delilah was under their care, they needed all the essentials.
Food, medical checkups and comfort needs are real important now, and the shelter asked for some help getting these.
“Delilah holds a very special place in our hearts. We are getting her seen by the vet today so we know how to best care for her. If you would like to donate the her medical and comfort needs you can do so through…”
Wherever Delilah’s past owner is now, just know that she was safe and in good hands.
Delilah has since passed away due to old age, but she did so surrounded by people who loved her. I’m sure her past family would have wanted nothing more.
Rest in peace, Delilah. You can run free to your heart’s content now.
Good on this shelter for setting an example.
