Rescued magpie finds loyalty and friendship in pitbull best friend

Dogs can make the weirdest friends. Usually, it’s other dogs and people. Sometimes it’s cats and other animal land-bound animals. But have you ever heard of a dog becoming friends with a bird, a magpie in particular? Well, if you haven’t, prepare to meet Peggy and her best friend Molly.

Out on a walk

Peggy is an English Staffordshire bull terrier who lives with her mom, Juliette Wells, in Coomera, Queensland. While out on a walk one day, Peggy alerted Juliette to an injured magpie that had fallen out of its nest. An animal lover, Juliette scooped the injured bird up and took it back home to recover.

Juliette says it was touch and go when she first brought Molly home.

She didn’t even know if the bird was going to make it through the first 24 hours, but after getting some advice from a local wildlife specialist about how to best nurse the magpie back to health, they were able to nurse her back to health after a week.

According to Juliette, Peggy was actually the one who nursed the magpie, which she named Molly, back to health. Peggy even began producing milk due to her body thinking Molly was somehow her puppy.

“Molly kept poking at her nipples too, so for now Peggy is wearing shirts until it passes so her nipples are covered,” Juliette told Metro.

Becoming a permanent member of the household

The initial plan was to keep Molly enough until she had gotten strong enough to fend for herself. As it turned out, Molly had no such plans. She settled in as a permanent member of the household as she and Peggy got closer and closer during her stay.

It quickly became evident to Juliette that the two wouldn’t be separated anytime soon.

Peggy and Molly are inseparable

According to Juliette, the two best friends even have their own language. At first, though, she wasn’t quite sure how everything would go. Initially, Peggy was terrified of magpies, but Molly changed all of that. So far so good, as the two are so close that they even cuddle together when they nap.

“They are together from the moment they wake up until when they go to sleep,” Juliette said. “Then they’ll cuddle and play all day. It’s so lovely to see them together. They definitely have a mother-daughter type of bond.”

Popular on social media

The pair are even on social media where they entertain their fans with their antics. This includes an Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok page. Juliette is an artist and has her own Website where you can check out her work.
