Rescue is working to reunite sweet mama dog found in the trash with her litter of puppies
Abandoning a dog is one thing, but being cruel in the process is another. Abandoning a dog on the street is terrible enough, but throwing one in the trash like garbage takes on a new level of cruelty.
Luckily, for one poor dog, she was spotted by a concerned citizen before the situation could get worse.
The Michigan Humane Society responds to a call
A caring citizen called the Michigan Humane Society about a dog in trouble. Volunteers immediately responded to the scene to help the dog. When they arrived, what they found disgusted them.
The dog had been abandoned in a Detroit, Michigan, neighborhood. She was malnourished and had been placed in a garbage can.
The dog had recently given birth to a litter of pups
The workers quickly realized that she had given birth to a litter of puppies recently. Searching the area around where she was found, investigators were unable to find any sign of them.
Somehow, she had become separated from her puppies. The volunteers thought that she might have been abandoned and her pups taken.
The dog is taken to a shelter
The dog was taken to the Humane Society to receive the care she needed. Volunteers at the shelter were also able to determine that the dog had either been used in dogfighting or had been abused before her abandonment.
And while she seemed sad to be without her pups, workers at the shelter were determined to find her a new home once she was ready. In the meantime, the Michigan Humane Society hopes to track down whoever is responsible for dumping her in the trash.
What to do if you find an abandoned dog on the street
If you come across an abandoned dog, there are some steps you can take to try and help. The most important thing is to make sure the animal is not dangerous before approaching it. In many cases, animals that you find on the street are scared or sick and tend to be more defensive around strangers. So, approach them slowly and cautiously until you are sure that they are not aggressive.
If it is safe to do so, try to secure the animal with a leash, belt, or piece of rope. This will prevent them from running away. If this is not possible, call the local authorities so that they can try and secure the animal safely.
Ideally, you should call animal control, but you can also call 911 if unfamiliar with the area and the dog is in immediate danger. Make sure to provide authorities with the animal’s street location and where it was last seen to help them find it once they arrive.
If you can secure the animal yourself, check for ID to determine if it is a lost pet and not just a stray. If you cannot find any ID on the dog, take them to your local animal shelter so they can be scanned for a microchip. The animal shelter will also be able to hopefully rehome them.
