Rescue pit bull hailed as local hero after saving owner’s life

Meet Astro, a heroic dog from El Paso, Texas. The family who took him in as a rescue wasn’t sure how long they would have him for, but Astro will be with them forever after a brave act of heroism.

Recently, Astro sprung into action when one of his family members suffered a medical emergency and there was no one else around to help. Astro ran to a neighbor and did everything he could to make sure they knew something was wrong and that help was needed.

Brave Astro honored for his heroic act.

Astro had never been given special training to alert neighbors if a member of the family was in distress. Something within him must have just known that is what he should do. The neighbor contacted emergency services and medical personnel were sent to rescue the person. Astro is being credited with saving their life.

Astro tries to get in the ambulance.

It appears that Astro is quite the loyal pup. He even tried to get into the ambulance with his family member as they were being taken away.

“We know that the dog was even trying to climb into the ambulance with the owner, firefighters had to lure him into a vehicle for family members to come and pick him up and without his help the patient might have never been found,” Enrique Duenas-Aguilar, an EPFD spokesperson, said.

Astro is a hero, a life-saving hero.

The family wasn’t sure how long they’d keep Astro for.

Astro was a rescue but the family wasn’t sure how long they’d keep him for. Bertha Martinez, Astro’s owner, said she’s scared of Pitbulls and was worried about keeping him.

“We never thought in a million years he’d do something like that,” Martinez explained.

“I’ve always been scared of Pitbulls and when we brought him home I wasn’t sure we’d keep him for a long time cause he was going to grow up,” she continued.

It was Bertha’s son who was saved by Astro, however. Now, the family could never bear to part with him.

“If you treat him well and don’t harm them or anything then they become what he is,” Martinez said.

Don’t judge a dog based on its breed.

The interim director for El Paso Animal Services told the media this story is a perfect example of why you shouldn’t judge dogs based on their breed.

“Not only was he a friend but he was there to help when his owner needed him the most,” Herrera said.

“He really set an example for dogs that look just like him, Astro is definitely a Pitbull and that is one of the main breeds you find in many shelters,” Herrera continued.
