Rescue pit bull refuses to be adopted without his best friend

All too often Pit bulls are the ones left at shelters due to an unnecessarily bad stigma around the breed.

Merrill the three-year-old Pitbull and Taco, an eight-year-old Chihuahua, are best friends that lived together in the Rocket Dog Rescue.

According to Rocket Dog Rescue, “Founded in 2001, Rocket Dog Rescue’s ultimate goal is to create a world where all companion animals have loving and permanent homes and where no good natured dogs, no matter what their age, are killed in shelters because they are considered to be surplus or un-adoptable.”

While living in the rescue, Merrill had to have a surgery that was beyond serious in nature and Taco stepped up the plate to be his support system while recovering. Taco never left Merrill’s side.

It was that surgery that sealed their fate as best friends forever.

When a man came to Rocket Dog Rescue looking for a pup, he wanted Merrill.

It was Merrill’s turn to prove to Taco how loyal he can be.

Merrill simply was not leaving with his best friend Taco. Taco had never left Merrill’s side and Merrill was not about to abandon Taco.

When the new owner came to pick up Merrill, Merrill and Taco let their dissatisfaction with this possible new situation be known loudly.

It was painfully obvious to everyone that these two could not be separated and thankfully the owner recognized this too.

Like any good dog loving person, this man adopted Taco too.

Now Merrill and Taco are living their best life together and will never have to be apart again.

It truly is amazing how loyal dogs can be to not only people but to each other.

We can all be thankful these two found each other and the perfect owner at the shelter.

Currently, there are 3.3 million dogs in shelters all across the United States looking for their forever homes, according to the ASPCA.

Places like Rocket Dog Rescue work to ensure dogs are not euthanized due to overcrowding. The ASPCA cites that almost 670,000 dogs each year are euthanized for various reasons in shelters.

When thinking about adding a four-legged friend to your family dynamic, consider stopping by a rescue first. Too many dogs, particularly Pit bulls, end up euthanized in shelters.

According to Save a Bull Rescue roughly 75% of shelters have Pit bulls immediately euthanized without ever giving them a chance for adoption and when shelters reach capacity, it is typically a Pit bull that is the first choice for euthanasia.

If you’re on the hunt for a dog check out places like Rocket Dog Rescue and check out your local shelter to give a dog a second chance.

Imagine bringing home a pup as thankful as Merrill and Taco. Some bonds just last a lifetime as these two prove.
