Rescued Pitbull wins hearts as he cautiously takes first step into new home

With an estimated 70 million homeless dogs and cats living on the streets of the U.S, many shelters struggle to get them off of the street. Once off of the street, it is hoped that these animals can find a new home.

One pit bull mix, named Boomer, had a rough time adjusting to life in his foster home. Not only was it all new to him, but he had a hard time even getting in the front door.

An emergency rescue

Samantha Zimmer found Boomer on the streets of Houston, Texas. Zimmer rescues and fosters dogs in the local area and so was more than happy to take Boomer in. She sprang into action after hearing about a pack of dogs who hung out near a Houston-area bank.

The problem was that a big snowstorm was on the way and the stray dogs faced danger from exposure. Her goal was to rescue as many of the dogs as possible.

“We got three dogs from that pack that day [and] Boomer was one of them,” Zimmer told The Dodo. “He had to be humanely trapped since he was too shy to approach us.”

Getting Boomer to come inside

Boomer had a difficult life while living on the streets of Houston. He had been shot with a pellet gun, had an untreated break in one of his legs, and tested positive for heartworms.

Problems arose when it was time to take Boomer to Zimmer’s home where she planned on fostering him until a more permanent solution could be found. It seemed he wasn’t even sure if he was allowed inside of her home.

“One day I was leaving for work and wanted to see if he would come inside on his own. We had actually just carried him inside most of the time,” Zimmer said. “It was clear that he had never been let inside the house and he wanted to come in.”

Initially, Boomer had lived in Zimmer’s garage, but she knew that was no place for him. She made several attempts to get him to come inside. But Boomer, who had lived on the streets for so long, was very hesitant to come inside of Zimmer’s home.

Finally, Zimmer was able to make a breakthrough with Boomer. As he stood outside, he slowly tried to make his way inside. Around him was draped a blanket, which was probably there to make him feel more comfortable. Eventually, he was able to work his way inside where Zimmer awaited him with open arms.

Getting ready for his forever home

Once he was able to muster up the courage to step across the threshold of his foster home, Boomer still had to go through an adjustment period. Zimmer and her family were very patient with Boomer and soon he was ready to go to a foster center in Wisconsin.

There he would undergo a three-month preparation period to get him ready for adoption. Before leaving for his next destination, Zimmer and her family were able to learn more about Boomer, including the fact that he loved to walk and the occasional belly rub. These are all things his next family can use to make him more comfortable living in his forever home.

In addition to Boomer, Zimmer helps a variety of other dogs find homes. She does this through a TikTok setup specifically to rehome the dogs she fosters. So far, her TikTok has over 737,000 followers. Zimmer also has an Instagram page that fulfills the same purpose of finding rescued dogs a new home.
