Australian animal clinic shows off rescued baby possum that looks a lot like Pikachu
As kids, most of us have been told that cartoons don’t exist in the real world. They are just parts of people’s imagination and there’s no way they can be part of our reality. Now, there’s proof that they’re all wrong.
In Australia, a rescuer came with an orphan possum.
She was about 5 months old at the time she was found. At that age, she was still probably living with her mom and had accidentally fallen off her back.
When she was brought in, she was shy. It’s a normal reaction, given that the baby possum clearly wasn’t used to human interaction at that age. Other than that, she had no health problems.
However, unlike most possums, she has a different color. Instead of gray or brown, it has this bright yellow fur.
It looks super close to Pikachu!
Her resemblance to the iconic Pokemon character is so strong. People who’ve seen her pictures almost have the same thing to say about her.
Pikachu belongs to a popular species of Pokemon. He’s a fictional character you’ll find in trading card games, television shows, video games, movies, and even comic books. He’s a rodent-like creature that possesses electrical abilities.
Pikachu happens to be the authorized mascot of Pokemon which is why he’s one of its most popular characters. And just like the baby possum, Pikachu’s color is yellow.
The possum’s bright color makes her special.
The people at Boronia Veterinary Clinic found out that the possum developed a different color because of a mutation that decreases the level of melanin in its body. Melanin is the group of pigments that give organisms their color.
There are more golden possums out there.
Possums with golden fur exist in the wild, particularly in Melbourne. Non-profit organizations get calls about them but they try hard to keep their location a secret for the possum’s safety.
In the wild, golden possums are more vulnerable to predators. Their color makes it hard for them to hide or camouflage as good as brown or gray possums.
Fortunately, the baby possum is safe.
She has a wildlife carer who takes good care of her. Her carer will also decide what happens to her in the future.
Dr. Stephen Reinisch, a veterinarian from the Boronia Veterinary Clinic said:
“If she becomes [a little] more out there and a bit feisty she might be released, but if she stays anxious she will remain in long-term care.”
Brushtail possums are considered as the most well-known possums.
They have a furless patch and long, thick tails that enable them to effectively hang onto tree branches. They are nocturnal creatures that feed on plants, eggs, small invertebrates, and insects.
They like to be in solitary. They do scent markings to maintain distance from each other. Possums may also do vocalizations, such as hisses, grunts, clicks, screeches, and guttural coughs.
When it comes to reproduction, they can breed at any time. However, they are more likely to breed and reproduce between September and November. Breeding peaks between March to May as well.
The possums’ population is declining because of habitat loss. They used to be hunted as well because of their valuable fur. Fortunately, they are now being protected in the mainland states.
