Rescuer examines the “lifeless” body of dog only to discover a live litter of pups

Animal rescue groups work tirelessly to help the homeless animals living on the streets of the U.S. Most often, their goal is to get them off of the street and into a loving home, but this is not always possible.

Some dogs are just too afraid of humans, for one reason or the other, and run away when a human gets too close.

This was how it was with Norah, a black stray that lived in a drainage ditch on the side of the road in Texas. Rescuers had heard about her and had decided to investigate.

When they arrived, they realized she had been scavenging from the trash cans in the local area, as well as being fed by the locals. But every time rescuers tried to get close to her, she would run away.

An expert is called in

Finally, rescuer JP Bonnelly was contacted. JP is renowned in the area for his ability to get hard-to-catch dogs off of the streets and into a good home.

Take Me Home Pet Rescue had agreed to take the stray in, as soon as JP could catch her, of course.

JP and another rescuer, named Pat, tried for weeks to catch the elusive Norah. The two were shocked at one point to see her “apparently” lifeless body lying in a field. As they ran over, she raised her head and ran off once again.

This continued until the rescuers noticed that she looked thinner than usual. It would seem she had given birth to a litter of pups, but they were nowhere to be found.

Thinking quickly, JP and Pat searched the areas that Norah was known to frequent, and, sure enough, they found her puppies — all nine of them — in the back of a local prayer house. The clever dog had hidden them away under some bushes behind the building.

Using the puppies to lure her in, the rescuers were finally able to get ahold of Norah.

Next, they took the new mom and her pups down to the Take Me Home Pet Rescue shelter to receive the necessary medical treatment. Norah was found to have Ehrlichia, heartworm, and a heart murmur, for which she received treatment.

It was thought that Norah might turn out to be feral due to her long period of isolation, but, fortunately, that was not the case. Once at the shelter, Norah was able to get over her fear and quickly became a friendlier dog.

After she was on the path to recovery, Norah was placed into a foster home until such a time that she could be adopted.
