The owner was keeping the German Shepherd tied to the tree permanently to scare off sheep. But the poor animal had no water or shelter.

The police notified the Takis Shelter of a German Shepherd who had been chained to a tree in a rural area.

A rescuer and a police officer later investigated the scene and were shocked at what they saw. The dog was indeed chained to the tree. They found a tin filled with dog food. But there was no water. The dog must have been incredibly thirsty.

Just a few nights before the rescue, there had been a big storm. If the dog had been chained up during that storm, then he would have been in danger and terrified.

The rescuer and officer could tell that the dog was scared of them. They could only imagine the other abuses that the owner had done to him.

The chain between the dog’s neck and the tree was only one meter, severely restricting the animal’s movement.

First, they gave him some water. He gulped it all down rapidly, confirming that he had gone a long time without drinking.

Then the rescuers were able to cut the chain from the tree. They used the chain to guide the dog back to the rescuer’s car.

The dog started putting his front paws on the car door, desperate to get inside.

Soon, the rescuer and the dog had arrived at the shelter.

The first thing that the dog did at the shelter was drink from a huge water bucket. He was still so thirsty. In fact, he kept on drinking for a full three minutes.

Once his first was quenched, the dog started playing with all of the other rescues. He was incredibly friendly and soon became happy.

The shelter then named him Rex.

Luckily, the shelter was filming much of the rescue. The footage soon became viral online. To date, it has gained over 3.4 million views. It also has more than 34,000 likes and 3,100 comments. People have been saying things like this:

Rex remained at the shelter, in Crete, Greece, until the rescuers found an owner that would treat him as the incredible animal he is.

Then a lady in Germany found the rescue video. Her heart went out to Rex. She decided that she needed to adopt him permanently. So soon, Rex would be heading back to the home of his ancestors.

Rex has only just arrived in Germany. It’s very different from Crete. But he is quickly adapting to the new environment. His new owner is showering him with affection.

This is just one of the many success stories to come out of Takis Shelter.

The head of the organization created Takis Shelter in 2014. At times, the shelter is home to over 350 dogs. The shelter also takes in cats, goats and sheep.

Takis Shelter will continue to rescue and rehabilitate animals for many more years.
