Rescuers find 150 German Shepherds forever homes after saving them from life of neglect
Taking care of a dog is the responsibility of the dog’s owner and, in many cases, properly caring for one dog is hard enough.
So, when authorities were called to a Georgia property, they were shocked to find over 150 German shepherds living in extremely neglectful conditions.
Rescuers with the Atlanta Humane Society’s Animal Protection Unit had to work quickly if the vulnerable dogs were going to be saved.
The dogs were found in a neglectful situation
The owner of the dogs was arrested. Meanwhile, authorities worked to get the dogs who needed the most attention medical help that they needed.
The dogs were taken back to two area shelters to receive immediate treatment.
Finding help for the rescued dogs
In addition, other rescue groups stepped up to help, taking some of the dogs in at other shelters across the country. This included rescue shelters in Daytona Beach and New Smyrna Beach, Florida, as well as elsewhere.
The look of sadness in the dogs’ eyes was heartbreaking
There were 167 German shepherds in total.
Unfortunately, three of the dogs had to be humanely euthanized, while a fourth escaped from a rescue group.
A video of the rescue shows the workers working frantically to help the neglected animals out, many of the dogs with a look of sadness in their eyes.
The dogs taken to the two Atlanta area shelters were treated for their injuries and cleaned up. Once they were settled, it was time to get them ready to go to new homes.
The problem was that many of the dogs were afraid and would have to work to adjust to the idea of trusting a human once again.
Beetle
One of the rescued German shepherds was Beetle, a shy but loving animal. After receiving medical treatment, some food, and a bath, shelter staff could see that she was still a little afraid.
As with many of the other rescued dogs, rescuers would go into Beetle’s cage to spend time with him to help ease his worries and fear.
Learning to trust again
As a part of their therapy, the staff would continuously pet, play with, and sit beside Beetle in the hopes of letting him know it was going to be okay.
Slowly, Beetle started to open up.
And while it was not instantaneous, over a few days, Beetle learned to trust again.
Now they had to find him a home.
This was in the form of Donald and Julie, a loving couple who decided to take Beetle into their home, Renaming him Teddy, the couple took him to their home so he could meet his new sister Maggie.
Teddy had made major progress
Donald and Julie were proud of Teddy’s progress and were eager to share as much in an interview.
He had come a long way from his days of neglect and now would receive a chance at a new life.
