Restaurant patrons tip staff $9,400 right before they are forced to shut down
The Coronavirus is changing life as we know it, leaving many people in the restaurant industry jobless. In times like this, it’s important to focus on the positives and find silver linings’ that give us hope. At one restaurant in Houston, Texas, that beacon of hope came in the form of two regulars, who left a substantial tip to help the whole staff get through the closure.
These people are amazing, we need more of them in the world!
A couple of regulars at Irma’s Southwest in Houston, Texas, tip the staff nearly ten-grand amid Covid-19 shutdowns
The husband and wife, who chose to remain anonymous, came in for one last time before the restaurant was set to shutdown dining-in for the foreseeable future. They had a tab of $90.12 but shocked the staff with a massive tip.
They left $1900 in cash and a whopping $7,500 on their credit card, leaving the owner of Irma’s and his staff stunned.
“We didn’t expect it, to be honest with you. They left a gratuity for the entire kitchen and service staff, which is unexpected.” Owner, Louis Galvan, told CNN.
Galvan split the $9,400 tip between all 30 employees, leaving them $300 apiece in their time of need
Irma’s Southwest has been in the Houston area since the ’80s, at this point, Galvan isn’t worried about profit margins, just helping his staff survive through the pandemic.
On the receipt, the husband wrote:
“Hold tip to pay your guys over the next few weeks.”
Irma’s Southwest isn’t the only restaurant that has seen extremely generous tips from regulars. Another restaurant, in Columbus, Ohio, had a patron leave a sizeable tip
Coaches Bar and Grill, uploaded a picture to Twitter, of a receipt with a $2,500 tip, on a tab of just $29.75. Shortly after the Governor of Ohio, announced a mandatory state-wide shutdown, another regular who wished to remain anonymous left the massive tip for the wait staff.
When the going gets tough, the tough stay loyal. This loyal, amazing patron of Coaches on Bethel left the staff a $2500 tip to help lighten the losses during this required closing of Restaurants & Bars in Ohio. @OnCoaches @nbc4i @GovMikeDeWine @wsyx6 @DinoTrip @10TVBot pic.twitter.com/scTpMJo0N1

“Please split equally between Tara, Nicky, Jim, Liz, and Arrun. The tip amount is $2,500.00,” the regular wrote on the check. Coaches Bar and Grill uploaded a picture of the receipt with a caption that read: “When the going gets tough, the tough stay loyal. Even though the tip was left for the 4 employees on duty, they asked their owner to include all the workers when splitting it
When you work in a restaurant, everyone becomes like one big family, so it’s touching, but not surprising that the 4 employees wished to split it with all 13 people on the staff. Owner of Coaches Bar and Grill, Benny Leonard, who has been in business for over 25-years told NBC News:
“Sunday was one of the wildest days since I’ve been open. I’ve been through a lot, but nothing like this.”
This is an unfathomable time for people all around the world, millions are losing their jobs with no end in sight. We must hold on to the stories like these, to give us glimmers’ of hope as we trek into uncharted territory. Everyone is in this together, maybe just maybe, the whole world can finally come together as one. It’s what we need to do right now!
