We’ve all seen a restaurant with a chalk sign near the front door. Usually, the sign has the daily specials and maybe what soup they have that week. If we’re lucky, the sign might even have a joke or two on it to catch your attention!

Getting witty with the sign is a way for restaurants to express themselves!

For one mom, getting stumped with a riddle at her local cafe turned into a viral sensation! Lacey Read-Cue was enjoying a meal one day at the cafe when she saw a riddle posted on the chalkboard as she was leaving.

After a few moments, she couldn’t solve it and was officially stumped!

Looking to the internet for help, she posted the photo online. The word puzzle was so tough that it even stumped all her friends! Here is the riddle that’s on the sign:

“What has 4 letters, sometimes 9 letters, but never has 5 letters.”

After she posted the riddle onto her social media, it soon went viral. Her apt caption read:

“This really screwed w my head 😂😭”

Some people were so frustrated with the puzzle that they demanded an answer from her! People couldn’t help but come back and check all day long, just to see if she had posted the answer yet.

Thankfully, we can solve it together.

Once you see it, you will DEFINITELY feel dumb for not seeing it before. The key to the whole thing lies in the sneaky grammar of it. Try this. Take some apostrophes (“) and put them around the word “what”, “sometimes”, and “never”. Now let’s rewrite it.

“What” has 4 letters, “sometimes” 9 letters, but “never” has 5 letters.”

See it yet? Since the ends of each sentence end with a period, it isn’t actually asking you a question!

The sign is telling you that those words have the said number of letters in them.

W-H-A-T, four letters. S-O-M-E-T-I-M-E-S, nine letters. N-E-V-E-R, five letters. See, it isn’t all that hard. It just took someone showing you to get it! How do you feel now knowing that you missed it?

As it turns out, the restaurant loves to put out interesting signs!
