Gemma, the German Shepherd, had gone through something horrific. Luckily, some kind-hearted people went above and beyond to make sure she was safe.

It all started when Gemma was in the car with her owner. They were driving down the I-95, when the car got into a horrific crash.

The impact of the cars was devastating. In fact, it was so strong that Gemma ended up being thrown from the car and onto a field nearby. The impact made her fall unconscious.

Hours later, Gemma woke up and looked around.

The cars were nowhere to be seen along the highway. She was incredibly worried about her owner. She hoped that she was ok. But she had no idea how to find her. So she tried to make her way to somewhere that she recognized.

Eventually, Gemma realized that she had no idea of her surroundings.

So she waited at the side of the road and hoped that help would come.

Hours passed, and then retired couple Eric and Mary VonCanon approached in their car.

They had heard about the crash and decided to take a detour in case there were still delays on the highway.

Then they spotted Gemma looking scared on the side of the road.

The couple pulled over. They could tell that Gemma wasn’t a stray thanks to her collar and leash. Then they noticed that she had small scrapes over her body. They reasoned that she may have been involved in the crash.

So Eric approached Gemma slowly.

He owned two German Shepherds himself and wasn’t scared.

But he could tell that Gemma had been through something traumatic, so it didn’t hurt to be cautious.

Eric stared into her eyes and could tell that the dog was friendly.

So he picked up her leash, read her collar and led her back to his car. He noticed that the dog was limping along and was convinced that she had come from the crash.

The couple drove to the nearest vet, Brook Run Animal Clinic.

The vet examined Gemma and had good news. Gemma had only sustained minor injuries. In a little while, she would be just fine.

Then Eric called the number on Gemma’s tag.

Gemma’s owner answered the phone. She was overjoyed to hear that Gemma was safe and well. In fact, she had been calling as many vet’s offices as possible to see if anyone had found her.

“She explained to me that even when they were trying to get her out of the car, all she was doing was yelling about her dog.” – Eric VonCanon

The owner had been injured in the crash. In fact, when Eric called, the owner was still in the hospital.

Soon, Eric and Mary brought Gemma to her owner’s family. The owner would be in the hospital for a while, but luckily, they would be reunited soon.

Sadly, the people in the other car in the crash were not so lucky. Four people in the other car ended up dying.

It is a tragic story. But if it weren’t for Eric and Mary, then Gemma may never have made her way back to her owner.
