Retired farmer secretly pays for the bills of strangers then his kindness is revealed after he passes

It is rare to find people who are genuinely kind. They are the type who never expect anything in return for the good things they do for others.

One of these people is the late Hody Childress, a retired farmer from Geraldine, Alabama who is also a loving father known for his kindness and genuine care for others in need of help. He may be gone now, but his memory lives on thru the lives of the strangers he helped and the family he loved.

Around ten years ago, Brooke Walker recalls that the kind old man asked her if there were families in the community who could not pay for their medication. She answered him yes and added that this actually happens frequently.

What Hody did next surprised the Geraldine Drugstore owner.

The elderly man pulled out a $100 bill, gave it to the woman, and told her to use it for everyone who does not have enough money for their medication. He gave the money away without even thinking of who he will be helping. All he wanted was to give assistance to anybody in need, even strangers he probably would not meet.

She recalled him saying:

“Don’t tell a soul where the money came from — if they ask, just tell them it’s a blessing from the Lord.”

A few days later in the same month, Hody went back to the drugstore to give Brooke another $100 bill and told her the same thing.

He handed her the money on a monthly basis for the next years and never stopped doing it. He had his pension and got some from it to give to Brooke regularly. He was happy to be of help and was not thinking about receiving anything in return.

Hody wanted to keep his act of kindness a secret and asked Brooke to be silent about his deeds. After a decade of doing this remarkable way to give back, Hody was forced to stop because his chronic obstructive pulmonary disease made him frail and too weak to visit the drugstore.

Hody was 80 years old when he passed away.

On New Year’s Day, the kind old man finally breathed his last. After his passing, Brooke decided to finally inform Hody’s family about his donations for the past decade which helped hundreds of people in need. Most of them are from the rural area about 60 miles from Huntsville.

It so happened that just before he passed, Hody also told his daughter, Tania Nix, about his donations.

“It was just who he was — it was in his heart,” shared Tania. She also mentioned about how her Dad spends not much, but always donated whatever he can.

Her words were filled with admiration for her father who used to go around town bringing their mother on his back. Peggy, Hody’s wife, had multiple sclerosis and could not walk. Hody also served in the Air Force for some time.

Hody’s life may have ended, but his memory is alive in the hearts of his family.
