Retired K9 leads firefighters to toddler’s trapped in burning building – saves both their lives

Thanks to the quick intervention of a retired K9 police dog, an absolute family tragedy was avoided just in time. Veteran Brent Feaser’s home recently struck fire, and the former member of the military almost lost his family in the tragic house fire. Luckily, there was someone around who saved the day and made a swift rescue – the family dog Maxx, who is now rightfully being praised as a hero.

Brent, from Longwood, Florida, wasn’t inside the home when the fire started.

He was outside with one of the neighbors, and they figured it was a great time to try and spot Jupiter through a telescope. While they did manage to catch a glimpse of the large planet, their calm and silent night was disturbed by the sound of an explosion.

Right in front of them, Brent witnessed an explosion in his own home.

It all happened in an instant and within a matter of seconds, the entire house was engulfed in flames. The sight was absolutely incredible and there was nothing that anyone could do about it.

Understandably, the man was in absolute shock as soon as he realized that his wife Margo and two kids were still inside the building. The man’s family was completely trapped inside, and the two-year-old and four-year-old children would have no idea what was going on.

“We were outside with my telescope, looking at Jupiter with my next door neighbor,” neighbor Chip Dover said to TODAY. “We were getting ready to come in when we heard a big explosion, and the house just blew up. We ran over there immediately and it was burning like crazy, and then we realized the family was still inside.”

Brent and his neighbor immediately went to the home and grabbed a piece of hard furniture from the porch to break the front windows.

In the meantime, another neighbor had spotted Margo at one of the windows. The neighbor managed to smash it and get the woman to safety. Right away – she wanted to run back inside to get the children. Brent was working on the exact same thing.

The family dog Maxx, a German Shephard, was also still inside the building. Brent was looking for both the kids and the dog, but he couldn’t find them. The smoke and the heat was just too much for him to handle.

When the firefighters arrived at the scene a couple of moments later, they pulled the man away from the building and took it from there.

They immediately went ahead and looked for the two youngest family members, but it was actually Maxx who came to them first. The four-footer has some experience dealing with traumatic situations, as he’s a retired K9 unit. He managed to locate the firefighters in the midst of the smoke, and he barked and barked while he led them to the children’s room.

Thanks to the dog’s intervention, the two children were saved just in time.

“We are grateful to the neighbors who jumped into action, and we especially thank the firefighters who selflessly entered the burning structure and risked their lives for the Feaser family,” said Sheriff Don Eslinger.

Nonetheless, the recovery was a pretty tough one, and the entire family has suffered from burns and injuries. They’ve had respiratory issues for a while because of the smoke, and all of them needed to go to a hospital for treatment as soon as they were safe. Even though none of them made it out unscathed – including Maxx – the entire family is expected to recuperate fully.

The firefighters, the family, and the neighbors can’t praise this hero dog enough – it was thanks to his brave efforts leading the firefighters that the two children are still alive. He prevented a tragedy, and the Feaser family is incredibly lucky to have a protective four-footer like Maxx.
