It would have been a grand wedding. But both the father and the daughter realized that that money would be better spent on others.

Manoj Munot had been successful in his career.

Over the course of his life, he had amassed a great deal of wealth.

Naturally, his children were able to enjoy an incredible quality of life that others in India could not access.

When it was finally time for Munot’s beloved daughter, Shreya, to get married, he planned a lavish wedding.

In all, the event would cost him $11 million. But he was happy to spend this sum, as he felt that that would show his daughter how much he loved her.

But then something started nagging him. He felt as if spending so much on his daughter’s wedding was extremely wasteful.

He spoke to his brother, Prashant Bamb, who is a local politician, about the issue. Bamb said that Munot should trust his conscience. He pointed out that there were many others out there whose lives could be transformed with just a small part of that money.

So Munot turned his attentions to the poor of his region.

“I had seen so many people- daily wagers, labourers, domestic workers- who had spend a lifetime toiling but failed to secure a roof over their heads.” -Manoj Munot talking to India Today.

So he met up with his daughter and asked her if she was ok with spending most of the wedding fund on building homes for the poor.

He explained that this meant they could finally have some security.

Shreya agreed with her father that the money should go to them.

She would have a modest wedding instead. All that was important was that she was marrying the man she loved and that everyone was celebrating their union.

So Munot set about looking for the families in his region that needed homes the most.

In the end, he managed to locate 90 families who desperately needed homes. He worked out how to build sufficient homes for these families and got the construction underway.

The finished homes are, by Western standards, small.

They’re 12 feet by 20 feet. But for the families, this is the greatest gift they’ve ever received.

Then Munot, Shreya and everyone else in the family had their wedding.

Some people must have been shocked to see that Shreya’s wedding was so small. But she and her husband knew that a modest wedding was worth it if so many families had found the stability that they’d lacked for so long.

After the wedding, Shreya led an entirely different ceremony.

She handed over the keys to the 90 new homes. It was one of the proudest moments of her life. She vowed to always take this lesson with her. Munot had indeed taught his daughter and her new husband something incredibly important.

A video of this story then appeared on YouTube, where it soon became popular.
