Robert Irwin sheds a tear on 19th birthday over words his father spoke of him before he passed
The beloved, late crocodile hunter’s son just turned 19. Robert Irwin is a man now, and he’s just the kind of man his dad would be incredibly proud of.
But he’s more than just his dad’s son. Robert is also a loving younger brother to Bindi, and he’s also a bit of an educator.
Through his media presence and work at the Australia Zoo, Robert has shown countless people how beautiful and priceless the natural world is.
And for his 19th birthday celebration at the Australia Zoo, people put together a video message for him.
It was a rainy day at the zoo and Robert spent a few moments to address the crowd and thank them for coming.
He makes sure to thank the camera crew and the band with the utmost sincerity. He might have the fame, but he knows how much of it he owes to the hardworking staff and crew.
Robert seemed enthusiastic to try his cake, but his mother Terri stopped him. They’ve got an important video to watch first.
All sorts of people acquainted with the Irwins put together a loving birthday wish for him. They were compiled into one video for Robert to watch in front of everyone.
They hailed from Australia and Africa alike.
Musicians, anti-poaching teams, and conservation teams all gave young Robert their most heartfelt birthday wishes.
It’s no doubt shocking to see how much Robert has grown. We all remember when he was that blonde toddler playing with his dad in old videos. But was there ever any doubt that he’d grow up to be a strong and enthusiastic man just like his father?
We should give credit to Terri too. Raising two kids after your husband’s passing ain’t easy, especially with the legacy he left behind. Looking at Bindi and Robert now, we can all agree she was a brilliant mother.
The last clip in the video is even more special. It’s an old message from his old man.
Steve never lived to see his kids grow up, but he never doubted how amazing they’d turn out.
It’s been 16 years since we lost Steve Irwin, and boy does time fly. Steve’s voice in the video narrates how he felt when Robert was born.
“I lifted him up, and you know he’s a little bloke. And I put him on Terri’s chest and we’re just stoked. And at that moment…at that very moment. I saw the light.” said the late crocodile hunter in the video
We all felt like we knew Steve Irwin. He always spoke to the viewers like they were his friends.
He might be the very reason most of us care about the natural world as much as we do.
But feeling like you knew him from TV is very different from actually knowing him. You know how much we miss him, right? Well, put yourself in his family’s shoes.
If this video makes you and I emotional, then imagine how Robert must feel watching it.
“This is why I was put here. Because I could be dead tomorrow.” Those words from him might sound scary in hindsight, but it’s not really too surprising to hear him say them.
Steve Irwin knew his job was very dangerous. It shouldn’t be a shock that he anticipated the day it might cost him his life.

I can imagine the anxiety he must have dealt with too. He danced with with 15-foot long crocodiles, ran from Komodo dragons, and even got bitten by snakes (albeit, non-venomous ones).
This was his job, and with a wife and 2 kids, he would have definitely worried about them potentially losing him to this very dangerous job.
“When they’re ready to run up our mission, I will gladly step aside. Then and only then will I know that I have achieved my ultimate goal.”
He said that when the day came for his kids to start catching the crocs in his stead, it would be the proudest moment of his life.
All of us who grew up with him are definitely proud of his kids too.
Of course, Robert shed a few tears watching this.

It’s hard to keep his composure in front of so many people after seeing that.
The young crocodile hunter is now a young man, and we can’t wait to see what else he achieves in his years to come.
