Rubble is the world’s oldest living cat – and he still knows how to party
Rubble might be the oldest living cat in the world, but he does not want to be an Internet celebrity for it. In fact, he’s perfectly content to have you just leave him be as he enjoys his 32nd birthday this year in May.
Rubble appears to be some sort of Maine Coon mix and has been living with his human, Michele Foster, since she turned 20 years old in 1988.
The pair live in Exeter, England, and have always had a calm, loving, and child-free home where he and his long-lived sister Meg were the center of attention. That’s part of the reason Foster thinks her feline friend has lived so long.
“If you care about something and someone and really love them, that goes a long way. I have always treated him like a child – I don’t have any children and had another cat called Meg – who passed at the age of 25. If you care about something, no matter what it is, it does last,” she told Bored Panda in 2018.
Foster vividly remembers bringing Rubble home.
“He was part of a litter of cats that my sister’s friend had, and I had just left home,” she said. “I was lonely living on my own so got him in as a kitten. He is very loyal. We used to live in London and moved around a lot.”
The average cat lives to be around 15 years old – that is, if they live indoors. Cats that spend a significant amount of time outdoors are susceptible to injuries and illnesses that cut their lifespan in half, so they tend to live until around the age of 7.
But in rare cases, cats can live to be close to 30. Anything over that is quite out of the ordinary.
When Rubble turned 30 in May 2018, he had a big party and photos of the festivities went viral around the world.
His veterinary clinic, City Vets, hosted the party and gave him a free check-up and his favorite cat food. And while he suffers from high blood pressure, medication keeps it under control and his vet says “apart from that, he is in remarkably good health.”
As for his world-record title, Rubble has no intention of claiming it. He’s got better things to do than fiddle around with the Guinness Book of World Records and the attention that comes with it.
He’s far too dignified for the limelight.
“He’s a lovely cat, although he has got a little grumpy in his old age,” Foster said. “He has plenty of life left in him yet, but I don’t think we will go down the Guinness World Record route as I am not sure he would like lots of people coming to see him or a fuss being made out of him. He is old now and would not like too much attention or be hassled. We would prefer if he was just left to live out his old age in peace.”
Believe it or not, the oldest cat ever, whose name was Creme Puff, reportedly lived to be an almost unbelievable 38 years and three days old! She lived in Austin, Texas from 1967 to 2005.
Regardless of whether or not Rubble breaks that record, he’s one lucky cat to have such a loving owner looking out for him.
And we have no doubt that Michele Foster feels fortunate to have had her best friend nearby for 32 years!
