Missing dog announces her return by ringing the doorbell in the middle of the night
Rajah, a lab-Catahoula Leopard Dog mix, escaped from her South Carolina backyard in Simpsonville on Sunday night. A neighbor set off some fireworks for the 4th of July celebration, startling and scaring the poor dog.
Rajah’s fur sibling, 2-month-old shepherd mix Ollie, just sat and watched as her canine companion ran off.
Naturally, her parents were worried sick. But Rajah did the cutest thing possible. She came back, announcing her arrival by ringing the doorbell.
Rajah’s owners, Ryan Washick and Mary Lynn Whitacre, were not able to chase after the dog as Rajah was a very fast runner. The couple didn’t know how far their dog had gotten.
The 18-month-old puppy, who is microchipped and wears a tag with their phone numbers on it, couldn’t stand the fireworks so she made a run for it. Mary Lynn used Facebook to raise awareness that her dog ran away. Even friends and neighbors were notified.
“Ryan and I were freaking out and we felt really helpless,” Mary said.
She even emailed Animal Services in case Rajah was picked up.
Ryan and Mary drove around Greenville County for four hours in the hopes of finding Rajah. When they didn’t use the car, Ryan would go on foot, walking around in case he’d see the dog.
“I kept hoping I wouldn’t find her on the side of the road,” he said.
They would head back home disappointed and dejected, but Ryan would stay up to wait for Rajah.
It was a very dark Monday morning, 3 am to be exact, when Ryan heard the doorbell. He went out to see who was at the door, thinking someone had found Rajah and brought her home.
Except there, on the porch, was Rajah, covered in thorns and poop. She rang the doorbell with her nose so she could be let in. This smart dog found her way back.
“She was just sitting there.”
Rajah was a mess. Mary says she must have had a great time. Maybe there was a separate celebration for the holiday no one knew about. Except Rajah did not look happy.
“She thought she was in so much trouble and she was sad and sulking, but we were like ‘we’re just happy you’re back.’ It was hilarious, and we couldn’t stop laughing.”
The first thing Rajah did was sleep. She must have found another place to party the night away.
Ryan and Mary Lynn have plans to build up their back fence with cattle fencing to prevent Rajah from escaping again. What’s to stop Ollie from imitating her fur sibling’s actions?
The couple’s Ring camera caught the moment Rajah hit the doorbell. Ryan posted the video on Reddit, getting over 1,900 comments. It’s definitely an adorable moment when the dog jumps up to hit the doorbell!
Ryan and Mary have no idea where and how Rajah learned to ring the doorbell though.
Mary works from home and there’s hardly anyone ringing the doorbell. It is highly possible that Rajah saw someone somewhere ringing a doorbell and being the smart dog that she is, figured it out on her own.
