After his mom’s cat dies, Russell Crowe pens incredibly moving tribute
Even onscreen tough guys, like Russell Crowe, have a soft spot in their hearts for animals it would seem. In a recent tribute on Twitter, Crowe honored his mother’s cat, Cinders, in a heartwarming post. But Crowe more than knew Cinders, he played a pivotal role in the cat’s journey to be by his mother’s side.
Not an animal lover
The trio’s story began way before Crowe and Cinders first met in a remote part of the Australian rain forest. Initially, Crowe wasn’t an animal lover. His mother, though, had always wanted a cat and would ask Crowe to get her one. His answer was always no until he found a kitten abandoned on the side of a remote road.
Crowe’s mom was persistent
It was during the filming of “Cinderella Man,” the story of an ex-boxer and his rise to fame. According to Crowe:
“In early 2003 my mum started agitating for a cat,” Crowe recalled in the Tweet. “My mum kept asking for a cat. In front of all the boxers,” he wrote. “I kept saying no.”
A discovery while out biking
While filming, Crowe decided to take the film crew on a bike ride through the Australian wilderness. He had paused for a drink when he heard a meow. Looking around, he was able to find a kitten, abandoned. The area was so remote that there was little chance that the kitten would survive. Not able to leave the kitten behind, Crowe grabbed her and put her in his backpack.
“I thought this was the universe telling me to respect my mother and give her what she wanted,” he recalled later to friends after presenting the kitten to his mother.
Giving his mom the cat she always wanted
His mother was floored by the act. The kitten was named Cinders after the movie Crowe was shooting Crowe’s mother and the kitten grew to love each other over the years. For her part, Cinders never seemed to lose her wild streak, never fully trusting humans, except for Crowe’s mom, whom she had grown to love.
Sadly, Cinders passes away

Together for over 15 years, Cinders passed away in 2020. And even though Cinders trusted few others outside of Crowe’s mom, she never scratched Crowe, leading him to conclude that was Cinders’ way of saying thanks.
“I took that as gratitude,” the actor said in the Twitter post.
