Woman salvages vintage rundown railroad car and turns it into a cozy tiny house

One man’s trash is another’s home?

With real estate prices skyrocketing, people have been looking for more ways how to own houses.

The tiny house movement picked up steam in the last decade to offset this housing problem.

Hannah, from Lake Tahoe, jumped on this opportunity when it presented itself. For under $400 dollars, she managed to buy the foundations of independent living.

In an RV park a mile away from the coast of the lake sits Journey.

Journey is a 1985 railroad trailer.

It has been refurbished as an amazing home. Right off the bat, one can’t help but be drawn to the house.

It has a beautiful teal coating with a mural of an old man as a mountain with its luscious beard flowing down as a waterfall.

Hannah bought the trailer in an auction.

She paid pennies on the dollar.

She was dead set to bid $350 and nothing more and luckily, she got it at that price.

Hannah said $350 was a small price to pay for peace of mind.

She said that whenever she moved states and rented, she had to get in some roommates so rent wouldn’t dent her savings too much.

However, she shared that she has met “interesting” roommates through the years. This pushed her to move out on her own and gamble on the tiny house dream.

Journey’s interior was stripped.

The only original part was the shell and the chassis. Just like in any tiny home, one should be creative enough to find the meeting point between economy and comfort.

Journey has an “elevated” seating space. The platform where the area rests also serves as storage for two main things.

One, it houses some of Hannah’s outdoor gear. And two, it also houses a twin bed.

The bed can be turned into a couch. All you have to do is push the bed into the platform. You just have to pull it out when it’s time for bed.

It also has amazing amenities.

The kitchen is equipped with shelves for several things like cooking ware, dinnerware, and spices. It also has an apartment-sized refrigerator to store fresh food.

It also has a laundry area complete with a washer and drier. When living on the go, this a convenience that some people give up.

This is why Hannah thinks it’s worth investing in laundry equipment.

Her home is simple and wonderful.

One of the best parts of the house is her bathroom sink. It craftily made use of an antique study table which you can open to have bigger counter space.

For Hannah, giving up living space can have big returns.

No rent has a big impact.

She said that financially, she was able to realign her budget now that rent is out of the way. It also gave her spectacular views whenever she was having her morning coffee.

But one of the main lessons she has learned with Journey was that you don’t really need much to function and that you can still live a full and happy life without having too many material things.

As they say, it’s not about the destination. It’s about the Journey.
