Good Samaritan risks his own safety to rescue a scared dog stuck on a roof

It’s not clear how a dog in Rhode Island ended up climbing out an unscreened window and onto the roof, but the pup was very lucky that people nearby saw his predicament.

The pup’s rescue has now been viewed over 6.8 million times in just 2 days on The Dodo’s Facebook page even though it happened back in 2019. Clearly dog-lovers are spending some serious time on social media during this quarantine!

The video begins with the dog perched high atop a two-story home.

It appears he got out through an attic window.

Dogs don’t really think ahead when they go exploring, and by the time this one realized he had made a mistake, he was unable to get back to safety. It’s not quite as easy to climb back down into that window!

Neighbor Daylue Goah was looking outside of his third-floor window at the time when he saw the pup in need and started recording.

“I’m just like, ‘Oh my god, don’t do that, don’t do that. Wait for help. Wait for help,’” Goah told WLBT News.

Neighbors called for help since the owner wasn’t home at the time.

Curiously, animal control showed up and then left. So it was up to a Good Samaritan to save the day.

“When I saw the animal control car, I’m like, ‘Okay, help is finally here’. Then, when they left again, I’m like, ‘Oh, my God. He’s being left alone,’” Goah said.

According to Goah, the dog’s owner and an unidentified Good Samaritan showed up at the same time. But it was the stranger who decided to risk life and limb to climb up onto the roof to save the dog.

The man climbed onto the roof from the same window the dog got out of, and tried to calm and capture the canine so he could get it back inside. At the same time, the owner was inside the house trying to get the dog to come in through a skylight.

It took some cajoling to get the dog to trust the man trying to save it, but eventually, it realized that there was nowhere else to go.

The addition of some dog treats also helped lure the pup towards its rescuer.

That earned him some trust as he pet the dog’s head to calm it down.

Then, he took an even bigger risk and climbed up on the highest part of the roof to get the terrified creature.

As he cradled the canine, the Good Samaritan was then able to usher it towards the skylight where its owner was waiting.

“After several minutes of persuading the dog, he eventually went on top of the roof, got the dog and went close to the owner. [He] passed the dog through the sunroof and rescued the dog,” Goah said.

No one in the neighborhood knew the dog’s rescuer, but Goah praised him for stepping in when the creature was in trouble.

“There are people who care even when they don’t know you,” he said. “It gave me hope, especially from where I come from, Africa. When someone comes to your aid when you are in need, that’s a great thing.”

After the dog was safely inside, the Good Samaritan climbed in through the skylight as well.

Goah said that no one in the neighborhood – even the dog owner – seemed to know the mysterious stranger. But he was clearly in the right place at the right time.
