Sanctuary on Greek island looking for caretaker to live with their 55 cats
Does living on a Greek island surrounded by dozens of cats sound like paradise to you?
If so, then you might just be the ideal candidate for a position offered by a non-profit organization on the Greek island of Syros.
God’s Little People is a charity organization founded by artist Joan Bowell and her husband. They have rescued dozens of cats over the years and are currently hosting more than 65 of them in their sanctuary.
However, it seems that, after all these years, they needed a break. Everyone does from time to time, after all, and these cats have been the couple’s life for decades. So, they decided to hire someone to care for the cats during the winter so they could take some time off.
The job posting did look like a joke, but Bowell tried to make sure it would be taken seriously.
“This is genuine and NOT a joke â friends, please feel free to verify!” she wrote on Facebook.
Indeed, being offered a job as a caretaker at a cat sanctuary on a Greek island, salary included, along with room and board at a secluded magical place on the mountain, where superb views of the island and the Aegean are offered… well, that sounds a bit fishy! But it’s true!
And for an American animal lover, it was a dream come true.
Jeffy Telson lives in California but spends her winters in Oregon.
When she saw the advertisement, she wasn’t sure applying was the right thing to do, and, in fact, she almost deleted the application email she had written. But her partner, Mitch, managed to talk her into taking the risk and following her dream.
ââĶI never imagined myself applying,” said Telson, “although I had always dreamed of returning to the islands to help the Greek cats. The job would require me being away from Mitch and all my animals for several months.â
Indeed, she was the perfect fit for the job.
With extensive experience with cats (she has her own domestic rescue organization, RESQCATS), she convinced Bowell that she would be the ideal caretaker for the sanctuary cats. Sometime later, Bowell traveled all the way to Santa Barbara to meet her and offer her the job.
Telson spent a winter at the sanctuary, helping strays and doing whatever she could to keep them safe and healthy.
She also undertook a project along with Bowell.
â[Bowell] picked a colony at a Greek Orthodox church at the end of a mountain road overlooking the Aegean Sea. We spent the next four months rescuing the sickest and most vulnerable, as well as, spaying and neutering as many in the colony as possible. Eventually, homes were found for many of the rescues we saved.â
This unexpected but super rewarding experience was, for Telson, a dream come true. She felt thankful she had the chance to live it. After Telson left, there was still a need for a new caretaker, which was Anna Novak, another American.
It seems there are always job opportunities with the sanctuary, so if you feel this is your dream job, why not let them know?
You might end up on a Greek island with dozens of furbabies rubbing themselves on your legs, and that doesn’t sound all that bad!
