Sarah Brightman and Josh Groban perform sultry duet from Phantom of the Opera

The world of music is one that is always in motion and while new genres, musical legends, and phenomenons may show up every now and then, there are some songs that are just simply timeless and can be considered as all-time classics.

“All I Ask of You”, one of the songs that can be heard in the absolutely classic musical The Phantom of The Opera, is definitely one of those special titles.

The singing duo Sarah Brightman and Josh Groban recently decided to perform their own rendition of this classic song, and they absolutely blew the audience away.

There’s a ton of history behind this song. Even though the musical The Phantom of The Opera was released back in 1986 in the United Kingdom, did you know it was actually based on a 1909 French novel written by Gaston Leroux?

The song tells a special story. It’s about a beautiful singer who goes by the name Christine Daae (which is also the role that Sarah takes in the video), but Christine is pursued by a mysterious figure. The mysterious figure turns out to be Erik, who is disfigured but is also a musical mastermind. He lives just underneath the Paris Opera House in a labyrinth. The mysterious figure is, of course, referring to the phantom of the opera.

The singer starts falling in love with this Phantom, and she’s absolutely surprised when his half-disfigured face is later revealed. At the end of the musical, the story takes a surprising twist. Erik actually wants to let Christine go and pushes her into the arms of someone who he believes loves her dearly – a man named Raoul. Raoul and Christine have known each other since they were kids.

Right here is where “All I Ask of You” starts, near the end of the musical. It’s an absolutely touching piece and perhaps the most impressive moment of the entire thing.

These two incredibly talented singers are absolutely passionate during their performance, but there’s another important part that makes this rendition so amazing: the background musical score which was beautiful as well.

The whole thing just blends wonderfully – these are two voices that were made to perform together and it’s an excellent complement to the background score.

The 59-year-old Sarah Brightman from the United Kingdom is mostly known because of her performances in musicals, but you’ll often find her singing opera arias as well. The singer has often been praised for her crystal clear voice and a large vocal range. Josh Groban is known in more fields of entertainment, as he’s also an actor who has played in The Good Cop and Crazy, Stupid, Love, just to name a few examples. The American musician/actor is a fan of both popular and classical music, making him the ideal partner for Sarah.
