"No Mow May" campaign asks people to leave their lawn alone until June to help save bees

Pollinators are a super-important part of our environment. And perhaps the most important of all the pollinators is the bee. These insects pollinate a variety of food crops that we enjoy throughout the year. That’s why it’s essential to make sure bees have healthy habitats.

Unfortunately, many factors put bees at risk. Bee populations have been declining for quite some time, and researchers aren’t quite sure why yet. Plus, there are concerns about the Asian giant hornet this year. That’s why it’s so critical to do everything we can to protect and save bees.

We need them for our food

Experts aren’t worried about bees simply because they don’t want a species to go extinct. Without these insects, it’d be incredibly difficult to pollinate our food. Because people depend so heavily on bees, we need to make sure they’re okay. Otherwise, we might not be able to get the nutrition we need.

Something to help

When you hear that bees are in trouble, it may make you feel helpless…like it’s just one more bad thing happening in the world. But you don’t have to approach it from that mindset. Instead, consider the actions you can take to help make a difference.

Don’t mow your lawn

It’s really just as simple as that. During the month of May, try not to mow your lawn if possible since an uncut grass is more attractive to pollinators. If you hold off on the mowing for a while, you’ll help encourage bees to come back to the area. This can have a huge effect on your local ecosystem.

You get to be lazy

Perhaps the best part of this solution is that it doesn’t require much effort from you at all. You don’t have to do anything. Simply stay indoors and don’t worry about handling the lawn mowing chore. For everyone who hate cutting the grass, they’ll be more than happy to comply with this remedy.

Alternative solutions

Of course, not everyone wants to let their entire yard get out of control. For example, if you have kids, you’ll still want to let them go out outside in the yard to play without worrying about tall grass. But there’s a simple solution. Just mow specific areas of your lawn or mow the lawn in a pattern. That way, you still leave plenty of plants there to attract the pollinators.

You can mow in June

Don’t worry about having to go all summer without mowing your lawn. After all, that’d be a big challenge. Rather, wait until June to mow if you decide on this solution for protecting bees and other pollinators. Think about it…it’s only a month-long process. What do you have to lose?

Do your part

All too often, it feels like what we do doesn’t have much of an impact. But even making small changes in your life can turn things around. That’s the case here. If we can all come together to protect one of our most valuable natural resources, we’ll have the opportunity to benefit from the productivity of the bees for ages to come.
