School teacher says he's no longer allowed to work with kindergarteners because of tattoos

Some people often get tattoos to signify a milestone or commemorate a special someone in their life. Sometimes, it’s simply about art and expression. While some will get a few done, Sylvian Helaine took tattooing to a whole new level.

Sylvian is a heavily tattooed French school teacher who had multiple changes done on his body over the course of years. He has tattoos all over his body and his tongue and has also surgically dyed his eyes black.

However, his creativity and expression proved to be a little too much as he recently lost his job as a kindergarten teacher. A parent of a 3-year-old at the Docteur Morere Elementary School in Palaiseau complained that their son was scared of him. Hence, they raised this to the school administration.

Even though the boy wasn’t from his class, Sylvian said that he was removed from the class for two months and was even prohibited from teaching children under the age of six.

Sylvian also said that has been teaching for a decade and that very few parents commented on his appearance. The majority of the parents were okay with it once they get to know him and his teaching style.

He believed that since he’s living in France, people would not judge him by his appearance.

“All of my pupils, all of my students and their parents were always cool with me because basically they knew me. As soon as you talk to me, you can…you realize I’m a proper teacher, that I’m a regular guy.”

Sylvian was 27 when he got his first layer of tattoos which took over three years to complete. He also had his tongue and the whites of his eyes surgically dyed black. He also mentioned that he views his several tattoos as a bodysuit, saying that it’s constantly evolving.

Indeed he’s very passionate about being tattooed as he mentions, “I will keep getting tattooed forever because when you’re passionate about something, you don’t want to stop. So, I started my second layer and after the second layer, I’ll do a third one and then a fourth one.”

Aside from teaching, Sylvian is also a model, actor, and comedian but teaching is his first love. At the tender age of 10, he was already determined to be a school teacher.

When asked about the incident, Sylvian voiced out his great displeasure in the move. He’s saddened and a bit angry at the same time, saying “I think it’s just disgusting. They didn’t even try to convince the parent that I was a good teacher and that I had a lot of experience … I felt betrayed by them and I’m a bit sad.”

Despite the unfortunate incident, Sylvian hopes that his students will see past his physical appearance and see him for who he truly is, and hope that they will grow up to be individuals with better tolerance and understanding towards others.
