Scientists finally explain the age-old mystery of why cats love to follow us into the bathroom

Does your pet cat follow you to the bathroom? Maybe, it even rubs on your legs while you are doing your business.

Imagine rushing your way to the bathroom and you’re browsing your phone, minding your own business when suddenly, you see a cute paw trying to dig its way to the tiled floor. Then you hear a desperate “meow” that you just can’t ignore.

Does this happen every time you go to the bathroom?

Don’t worry, you are not alone. People who have cats can attest to this scenario, and it’s not a one-time thing. Most cats seem to suddenly crave more of your attention when you’re in the bathroom – never when you’re available, of course.

So, what is it about cats and bathrooms?

Let’s focus on what the experts have to say about this behavior.

Mikel Delgado, a certified cat behavioral consultant, says that scientists don’t have concrete answers, but they do have some pretty good theories.

“There might be various reasons cats like to join people in the bathroom,” says shares with Inverse. “Their litter box might be in there, so it could be a room that smells very familiar. Cats also probably know that when we are on the toilet, we are a captive audience — nowadays we are so busy and distracted that many cats are probably looking for an opportunity to have our undivided attention!”

While wildlife biologist Imogene Cancellare agrees with Delgado’s “captive audience” theory, she also adds that:

“Lap sitting is really popular in the loo — I assume this is characteristic opportunist behavior to find the warmest spot in the house and exploit the attention of their human servants,” Imogene tells Inverse. “I think they want to be the center of the universe and have learned that humans don’t do much when sitting in the small room with the strange water chair.”
