Mom places kids on 'screen detox' from all electronics - daughter jumps 5 reading levels

If you’ve paid any attention to the news lately, you’ve seen plenty of reports about the effects of electronic devices on kids. Especially when it comes to action games, many children become aggressive. It’s a real concern that parents have. While they don’t necessarily want to disconnect them from games and videos altogether, they see a need to cut back.

One mom went a step further. She completely removed access to all electronics, meaning her kids had to find other ways to entertain themselves. But what makes this story so unique is the results she posted after the fact.

Their minds are still developing.

The biggest problem is that the minds of kids are still developing. For that reason, what they hear and see can have a significant impact on both their physiological and mental health. In particular, a lot of kids who spend too much time using electronics begin to struggle with interpersonal skills.

One mom had some genuine concerns.

Molly DeFrank, a dedicated mother, made the decision to unplug all her kids’ electronic devices…literally. She figured it wouldn’t hurt but what she discovered was much more profound. This came about after she noticed how screens were negatively affecting her children. So, she decided to do something about it.

As expected, she met with some resistance…at least at first.

While she’d pondered her decision for some time, the end of her rope came after returning home from running errands. When she walked in the door, not one of them greeted her. No “Hi mom,” “We missed you,” nothing. Instead, they immediately wanted to know if they could play on her phone. That was it…she’d had enough.

Her husband backed her 100 percent.

Molly and her husband now needed to sit down with all five of their kids. They knew simply unplugging everything with no detox time would be disastrous. So, they put a 30-day plan in place. But what they discovered was their children recovered much faster than expected.

Revolt turned into happiness.

With all five of their kids under the age of 10, you can only imagine their reaction. As molly explained, “It turns out that screens were doing to my children exactly what the studies claimed they were doing: cultivating distracted, grumpy, and argumentative little people.” Within a short amount of time, she saw a dramatic change in them.

The kids started getting along much better.

But that wasn’t all. Without a screen in front of their faces, they began reading, playing games together, and acting like healthy and happy kids. Molly stated, “Quitting was shockingly easy, surprisingly sustainable, and my nine-year-old daughter has told me on several occasions that she’s glad we’ve cut them out.”

Not all technology is bad.

What started out as a 30-day detoxification process turned into a quick resolution that made everyone in the household happier. Instead of them playing video games or even watching television, all five of the kids will hop in mom and dad’s bed to read a book. This is what you call quality family time. Now one of their favorite pastimes is a trip to the local library.

Molly and her husband stress that “Technology can, of course, be useful – in its right place. The key is making technology work for us, rather than the other way around.” A lot of other parents are following suit and finding they have the same positive results.
