Sculptor creates captivating animals 'crawling' out of trees using fallen logs

How would you feel to have a piece of nature in your house? A reminder or even a connection with a world that we often tend to forget due to our busy and hectic lives. Because if you’re interested, we might have an artist you’d be interested in.

The Japanse-Canadia Sculptor, Mori Kono, can take any lifeless log found in nature and transform it into this beautiful, life-like animal sculpture that looks like it’s crawling from inside the log. Mori Kono and his team for more than 20 years have delivered to their clients high-quality creations that are just too good to be true!

While the majority of us would probably disregard a fallen log or we might even have difficulty separating the different wood types, Mori Kono is being creative with what nature offers so generously, such as red cedar, alder, or birchwood. In his hands, the wood takes life and transforms into bears, birds, rabbits, and chipmunks. His creations really look like they have just jumped out of the pages of a fairy-tale book.

Kono is a very gifted artist who works with a range of power tools for careful details like the carved fur or feathers; or for the animals’ eyes, he prefers to use a small handheld chisel. Once the animal is carved then Kono proceeds to the coloring process, which helps the visual “separation” of the animal from the pale-colored logs.

According to their studio’s website, “Our main mission is to bring out, or back, the wondrousness of nature to this busy modern world. All living things in this world exist and accept every rule of mother nature… living in balance. If our completed works of art are able to contribute to society – to have a deeper feeling and respect towards nature and the wild more often, then that is our greatest dream!”

And what a noble and romantic cause, really! As people nowadays are just too absorbed in their daily lives to actually take a break, stand back and just try to relax and feel in sync with the universe. The fast rhythm of life makes us lose valuable moments that we owe to ourselves, moments when we should endeavor out in the wild, and try to reconnect with mother nature.

As you can see from the photos, it isn’t surprising why Kono is considered a high-quality architectural woodcarver and wildlife sculptor in his field. In the photos shared on his social media accounts, his wood-carving techniques are really impressive.

Don’t forget that Feng Shui considers the presence of animals in the house as something positive and they might even bring you luck. Of course, these wood-carved animals may not be like the ones “indicated” by the Feng Shui, but nonetheless, they could undoubtedly warm and light your space!
