One thing that a lot of dogs have in common is that they love to go outside. And while their owners might prefer going for a walk when it is clear outside, dogs aren’t as picky. Some even like to go out in the rain where they can play and have a little fun.

After a golden retriever was caught in the rain, a kind security guard was there to lend him his umbrella until his owner’s return.

A picture of the security guard shielding the dog from the rain found its way online. Working at Morrisons, a supermarket chain found in the U.K., the man found the dog sitting out in the rain, drenched from the downpour. Granted, it wasn’t raining when his owner tied him to a pole when he went inside the store.

Lending the dog his umbrella

The security guard, named Ethan Dearman, was doing his rounds at the Morrisons location in Giffnock, Scotland. That was when he found the dog tied to the pole while sitting in the rain. Not wanting to move someone else’s dog, Dearman decided to lend the dog his umbrella instead.

The scene was spotted by a woman from Glasgow, who snapped a picture and posted it to her Twitter. There it got over 154,000 likes and was seen by the dog’s owner, who responded with his own tweet about the sweet show of kindness by Dearman.

Is it OK to take your dog out in the rain?

If you do let your dog play out in the rain, keep a few things in mind. First, remember to dry them off when they come back inside. Not only can they leave a mess if allowed to run around the house soaking wet, but wet, damp fur can harbor bacteria and fungus, which can be harmful to your pet.

Drying them off can also prevent the onset of pneumonia, which can happen in animals just like people. If you notice your dog coughing, having difficulty breathing, or acting lethargic, take them to the vet to get checked out.

Protecting your dog in a thunderstorm

Lightning is another factor to consider when being out in a storm. Metal tags can attract lightning, which can be deadly for your pet. If you see lightning in the area, bring your dog inside or seek shelter. Otherwise, your pet, not to mention yourself, could be struck and injured or killed.

For the most part, as long as you avoid going out in a thunderstorm, keep your dog dry, and don’t let them play in the rain too much, they should be fine. You should also monitor them while they are outside to make sure that they don’t do anything they shouldn’t.
