The Selkirk Rex breed are composed of “designer” cats with fur like a poodle’s – and it has a fascinating history.

It all began with a common housecat with strangely curly fur. She was rescued from a shelter in Montana and named “Miss DePesto of Noface” (or “Pest” for short).

Pest ended up in the home of a breeder of Persian cats named Jeri Newman who mated her with a black Persian cat named “PhotoFinish of Deekay.”

When Pest had her kittens, the breeder realized the curly-haired gene was dominant, meaning that roughly half of the litter was likely to inherit their mother’s curly hair. Three of her 6 kittens were curly, while the other three had long, straight hair. Thus, a new breed of cat was born.

These unique and loving cats can be long- or short-haired, but they don’t come cheap. Instead of investing in one of your own, check out some of the cutest “poodle cats” on the Internet.

1. Henri, Georges, and Édouard

These adorable brothers live in Ottowa, Canada and show that you can have an entire Neopolitan ice cream display of curly kittens!

2. Gina and Gepetto’s babies

These little babies live in Switzerland and are quite the handful.

They belong to an Ocicat and Selkirk Rex couple and are too cute for words.

3. Momo

Momo proves that Selkirk Rexs are just like any other cats – they enjoy napping and walking on laptops and books.

4. Snorky

Snorky is our favorite Selkirk Rex simply because of the permanent scowl that makes us laugh.

Move over, other grumpy cats!

5. Glenn

Not all of this breed looks cranky, we just love the ones that do.

How can you not smile when you see Glenn?

6. Toulouse

In summer, these cats often need a bit of a trim.

But Toulouse looks a little scandalized by the new hairstyle.

7. Neal

Don’t you just want to give some snuggles to Neal and his curly little ruffle of fuzz?

We sure do!

8. Chirico

Chirico might look unique, but this cat loves its Amazon boxes just as much as the next feline.

9. Powder

Powder is stuck at home in quarantine just like the rest of us.

This curly cat looks like it’s wondering when it will all be over (just like the rest of us!).

This Finnish cat wants to know what’s for dinner.

And make it snappy.

Smoky is one serious supermodel-esque Selkirk Rex!

Just look at that steely glare!

12. White and wooly

While we don’t know this cute, curly kitten’s name, we do know it lives with its mom in Poland where it enjoys looking adorable and torturing the fish in the home’s fish tank.

Otherwise, it looks pretty innocent!

13. Mask

This sweet Russian kitty looks like he’s had about enough of having humans home all day.

It’s a tough time for housecats!

14. Lulu

This sleepy Japanese kitty looks so cuddly that we’d be ready for a nap anytime we saw her.

Doesn’t she look like a little lamb?

15. Olive

Mr. Sock Monkey is a big deal in Olive’s house and while she has deigned to play with him, she looks mostly unimpressed.

After all, she’s the cuddly one!
