Senior builds home over pond with a hole in the floor so he can fish anytime he wants
Have you ever had a dream of something you’ve always wanted to do but never had the courage to try?
For one determined man, he took that dream and turned it into his reality.
Paul Phillips, a contractor in Skiatook, Oklahoma, knew his dream was to fish whenever he wanted.
He had a regular fishing spot on the Oologah lake where he loved to go and sit for hours, waiting for some nice big fish to come along.
One day while he was there though, Paul was told he was no longer allowed to fish there.
He decided then and there that he would make a place where he could fish to his heart’s content and never be told he couldn’t.
“One of these days,” Paul remembers thinking as he tells his story to News On 6, “I’ll have a place of my own and nobody can tell me I can’t fish there.”
So, with that thought in mind, he purchased a plot of land and set to work making his dream come true.
The first step he had to do was to build his very own fishing spot.
He hired a backhoe and dug a huge trench on his land which he then filled with fresh water and tons of fish.
Next, he hired a local contractor to help him build his dream home.
The pair worked together to build an 1850 square foot home with 3 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, and a very unique feature.
On the main floor on the home, right in the living room and beside the fireplace, Paul plans on adding a 4 foot by 4 foot hole.
The plan is to have a trapdoor in the floor that, when opened, provides a direct line to the fishing pond below.
“I’ll be able to sit right here in the rocking chair,” he says as he picks up his fishing rod and imagines his future.
Along with having his living room fishing hole, Paul also designed his home with a large wrap-around deck so that he can invite over his fishing buddies and they can all sit out together.
Luckily for him, a few of his neighbors are avid fishers too.
“The lady next door, she loves to fish,” He said, pointing towards one of his neighbors, “and this lady here, she can’t wait for spring to get here so she can hear the frogs hollering.”
Though some of his neighbors might not have originally been very excited about what was happening in their area, once they met Paul and saw his passion for fishing, everyone was on board.
There is an old saying that goes, “Give a man a fish and he’ll eat for a day, teach a man to fish and he’ll eat for life.” Paul certainly took that to heart.
He took it one step further though, and decided to build his own perfect fishing spot.
Surely he will now be both fed and happy for the rest of his days.
