Shelter comes up with clever solution for senior cat that wants to be held 24/7

Most cats don’t like being held. It makes them feel disrespected, particularly when humans just scoop them up for no reason.

Dougie, a 15-year-old senior cat, is different than most cats.

He actually likes being held. There’s something about getting a hug that makes him feel super happy.

When he doesn’t get enough hugs, he’d meow so loud.

The people at the Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland don’t mind giving the poor cat what he wants. However, it’s not always possible for them to keep the cat in their arms, particularly if they have work to do.

Since the staff doesn’t want to disappoint the senior cat, they came up with the perfect solution to the problem.

At first, they tried a sweater papoose. It probably didn’t feel too comfortable for the cat and the staff so they came up with something else.

In a Facebook post, the shelter explained:

“We thought creatively and decided a baby bjorn allowed Robert to both hold Dougie and do his job effectively.”

In case you’re wondering, Robert is one of the shelter’s feline team members. And as you can see, Dougie adores him so much. He likes being with Robert most of the time.

And the trick worked like a charm!

Dougie looks so happy to be perched in the carrier. With the view he’s getting, that’s not surprising. He can see everyone around him perfectly!

A lot of people were amazed by the shelter’s solution. Most of them found the idea too cute. Others considered it as an inspiration. They’re considering doing the same thing for their own cats!

Dougie has been in the clinic for treatment.

He’s suffered from inflammatory bowel disease and the staff was trying to get him back to his optimum health. This condition is characterized by prolonged inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract. With constant inflammation, the GI tract becomes thick which prevents it from digesting and absorbing food properly.

After a lot of hard work, Dougie has been put up for adoption.

The director of the shelter’s community engagement, Jeana Roth, shared:

“He loves affection and to be near his people all the time. He’s also very chatty and will even give kisses when you ask him for them. He gets along well with other pets and even grooms them.”

And luckily, a family welcomed him right away.

After a Facebook post about him went viral, people started reaching out, asking if they can take the senior cat home. In fact, the post was able to reach 70,000 Facebook users.
