Senior dog rescued after spending 14 long years locked in a shed
After 14 long years, at long last, help has arrived for a senior dog named Cayden. His helpless condition and uplifting story of survival were posted by Grateful Hearts Senior Dog Rescue & Sanctuary on their Facebook page.
The 14-year-old dog miraculously survived life after living his entire life in a shed. It sounds pretty unreal but yes, he lived for 14 years, alone, in that hopeless place.
Cayden’s severe condition
The rescuers were stunned by the helpless condition of the senior dog when they found him.
His teeth are sticking out of his mouth, on both sides, and oddly positioned. One of his ears is swollen and infected. He is also covered in fleas. Cayden’s sight is pretty much zero, if not totally blind and he is also deaf.
With all that being said, how was this dog able to survive? And how did he end up there?
How did the rescue team know that Cayden was there?
They wrote in the Facebook post,
“Because his owner actually called about him after his legal hold expired and he was on his way to the rescue. Admitted it. “
If that isn’t called heartless then I don’t know what’s that called. How could a person deny a dog in his/her home? How can they let a poor dog live on his own in the open? In a shed? Alone? That’s just so cruel!
If Cayden’s owners saw him unworthy of their love and home, the rescue team saw otherwise,
“This dog is the sweetest, most gentle, unassuming boy… He has grabbed the hearts of all involved in his rescue so already, this dog has so much love in less than a day…more than his entire prior 14 years in a shed.”
When poor Cayden had his probably first decent meal after years, according to his rescuers,
“He eats like he hasn’t had a meal for weeks and that statement is likely truer than you think. Very skinny and nothing but fur and bones.”
Just reading through his story already makes our hearts cry from the inside. We can only imagine the hardships that this dog has been through. And to think that he endured it all for 14 years makes everything more unimaginable for a dog.
Saving Cayden
In a follow-up post, they provided a detailed story about the progress and updates about Cayden.
According to the rescue team, they have given him a warm bath, probably something that he hasn’t had for the longest time. He’s also getting meals throughout the day to get him back in shape.
He is walking and getting used to his surroundings and all of the people in the rescue team. He is showing tremendous progress each day. They also got rid of his fleas and despite his helpless condition from the day he was rescued, Cayden is showing tremendous heart and fighting it all out.
He is not ready to leave this Earth yet and the people around him are ready to give this senior dog the best years of his life from now on.
Better days are coming for brave Cayden
In a recent post, they’ve given another update about Cayden’s surgery and other updates with his injuries before.
“Cayden update….this was a long long surgery. Big hugs to Doctor Sarah…21 toofers out.”
They added,
“Left ear is healing and clearing up nicely. Right ear definitely needs a canal libation but we somehow got to get that skin better.”
All we can do for now is to pray for this senior warrior.
With all these medications, treatments, and surgeries, we hope that his body battles through it all.
