15-year-old dog taken to shelter to be put down but veterinarian adopts her instead

Just when you thought you’ll have a forever home, you found yourself back to square one.

It’s already difficult enough to end up in a dog shelter. Whether the dog is abandoned, abused, or stray, surviving just to be rescued is already a feat in itself.

But that’s not the most difficult part. Waiting if you’ll ever have a forever home is the most painful. The anxiety and the hopelessness fill the days. But what if the dog was already adopted but was surrendered once more after 12 years?

Netty was adopted in 2010.

Since then, people thought she would live out the rest of her life in love and comfort. However, just last August, Netty found herself where she started.

She was returned to the Pennsylvania branch of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals or the SPCA. Her previous owners said the reason was because of incontinence.

“The return rate for animals varies and it doesn’t happen often, but when it does, especially after a decade, it can be heartbreaking. It was in Netty’s case.” Gillian Kocher, director of public relations for the organization told Newsweek.

The Pennsylvania SPCA didn’t want to focus on the why.

Netty hasn’t many years to live and focusing on the circumstance won’t make her situation any better. Instead, they swore to give her the best care during her golden twilight years.

She received medication and treatment, especially when they found out that she was also suffering from a urinary tract infection.

Netty received lots of love but they also hoped that she could get adopted.

The rate for adoption of senior dogs is already a hard set of odds to conquer. Good thing for Netty, however, the Pennsylvania SPCA has a big audience.

Netty’s story was shared on Facebook.

It was through the post that veterinarian Amy Kidd saw Netty. The owner of Pocopson Veterinary Station took Netty under her care.

She said that the ultimate goal is to love Netty and spoil her for the remainder of her days no matter how short and fleeting. Kidd told Newsweek that Netty will be treated like a queen.

Kidd has been rescuing senior dogs and dogs with special needs.

As a veterinarian, she is also aware of the stark contrast in adoption rates between puppies and kittens to older animals. This often leaves puppy mill dogs and senior dogs to be euthanized.

She also shared that Netty will fill the hole that their 12-year-old Pointer left when he passed away from cancer.

Kidd was happy her kids fell in love with Netty.

And Netty feels the same way too. Kidd shared that the moment Netty arrived, she fell asleep on the couch surrounded by house cats. She also took a liking to the family bean bag which she now considers her bed.

She also became her husband’s meeting supervisor and constant companion since he was working from home.

While Netty’s age meant a whole box of ailments, she’s lucky to end up with a vet.

Kidd shared that since they have a pool, they started physical therapy sessions for her arthritis. She is also watching out for complications that she thinks Netty has. All in all, Netty is now in good loving hands.

As for Pennsylvania SPCA, they’re just happy that Netty found a loving home because not all senior dogs can get that chance. They also said that they will take in returned pets no matter what and will also do their best to rehome them,
