Bella and Snowball had been loyal family members to their owner for so many years. But when they became inconvenient, he gave them up.
For years, Bella and Snowball had known only one home. Bella, the larger dog, was taken in first.
Her owner seemed kind enough and fed her well. Then one day, Bella gained a younger sister.
Snowball, a small white dog, came into the home a year or so later.
Soon, the two animals became best friends. Bella had no qualms with sharing her home with the little dog. Snowball fit in well.
The years went by, and the two dogs were content. But then something bad happened.
Due to a health condition, Snowball lost her sight.
The dog ended up relying on Bella to get through the world.
Unfortunately, the dogs’ owner made a saddening decision. Both of the dogs were now in their senior years. So the owner reasoned that it would be best to give them up.
One day, the owner packed Bella and Snowball into his car and drove them to Carson Shelter. This facility was a high kill shelter. The owner didn’t seem to care that he was basically condemning his dogs to death.
Bella and Snowball, of course, didn’t realize what was going on. They just waited patiently for their owner’s return.
After all, he had left them at places like this for a few weeks at a time before. Perhaps that was what was happening now, they reasoned.
But as the weeks went by, the dogs realized what had really happened.
Their owner of so many years had given them up because they had become more difficult to care for than before. At least they still had each other.
Every day in the shelter, the dogs would stick close together.
This environment was scary, especially for the blind Snowball, but if they stayed close, they could at least tolerate it.
Soon, the shelter was reaching capacity. As old and disabled dogs, Bella and Snowball were high up on the list for being put down.
And then, just a few days before they were due to be put down, something amazing happened.
A woman entered the shelter and explained that she wanted to take home the hardest to adopt dog.
The volunteers showed her Bella and Snowball. At first, the woman was hesitant. She was unsure if she could take on two dogs. But when she heard their story and saw how affectionate they were to one another, she knew she had to take them home.
The woman took Bella and Snowball for a walk, just to be sure that they were as nice as they seemed.
After a few blocks, the woman could tell that they were indeed great animals. Bella was big. But she was a gentle giant. Both of the dogs were so happy to be outside.
When she was walking them back to the shelter, Bella tried to pull in the other direction. The dog had no way of knowing that she and her sister were not be going to be caged in there again.
The woman signed some paperwork and loaded the dogs into her car. Bella and Snowball are now happier than ever. Their new owner treats them with more affection than they have ever known.
