Seven best friends turn abandoned building into their personal retirement dream mansion

Have you ever thought about what you might do after retiring? Maybe you plan to move to Florida and spend your days by the pool. Perhaps you want to be closer to your kids so you can play with your grandchildren. Or you might want to travel to see the world.

Seven best friends in China decided they’ll spend their old age together. The friends have known one another for more than 20 years, many of them while in their 20s. They began as coworkers. Now, two decades later, they’ve become “closer than siblings.”

They are so close they decided to buy a house to live in…together.

One of the women, Jin Du, says the whole thing started as a running joke among the friends. “It was just a joke,” she said. “We will get together when we are 60 and live the retired life together.”

Maybe there was more to it than that.

But then the joke became a possibility. So, the friends started looking for a property together. They found one — a crumbling old building on the edge of a rural village. With some hard work and quite a bit of money, they managed to turn it into the group home of their dreams.

The ground floor serves as a community space.

There are an open kitchen and dining area with a large table — big enough to fit the women as well as their spouses and children. There’s also a living room where they plan to read books and talk. They decorated the living areas with decorations and furniture they collected on trips to Morocco and India.

Of course, each of the ladies has a separate bedroom.

The friends say that while they enjoy time together as a group, they each have individual personalities and interests. “We’re all independent individuals but we can communicate and rely on each other at the same time,” said Jin Du. “Ten years later our children would have all grown up. So, we hope we can be together again in 10 years.”

They also share a love for tea, which led to one very particular choice for the property.

“My girlfriends all enjoy tea, so we want a tea pavilion in the middle of the field,” said Jin Du. “On the night of the last Mid-autumn Festival, several of us drank tea and saw the moon.” The tea pavilion overlooks the rice paddies surrounding the property. Meanwhile, the bedroom windows overlook the fields, allowing a morning glimpse of mist and sunlight.

And don’t worry — they have plenty of plans for how they’ll spend their time together.

“We’ll cook, have barbecues in the fields, sing and collect food from the village,” said Jin Du. “We joke that each of us should start to practice one skill now, so we won’t be lonely and fight with each other 10 years from now. Some can cook beautiful food, some know traditional Chinese medicine, some play instruments, and some grow vegetables.”
