“Perdita, we thought she was sick, turns out she’s just a jerk,” reads a Jan. 22 post on the shelter’s Facebook page.
Animal shelter writes brutally honest adoption profile for ‘jerk’ cat
So far, we have been used to shelters posting sweet and cute ads about animals they are hosting so that they can encourage people to foster or adopt them.
Although this usually works, it’s not always the truth.
Not all animals are angels that love cuddling with you, curling up next to you and watching romantic comedies on Netflix.
In fact, some of them are complete jerks.
Like Perdita, an adult cat that was recently hosted by the Mitchell County Animal Rescue.
Perdita was a home pet, but unfortunately, her owner died and she was sent to the Rescue in hopes that she would soon be adopted by someone else. But things didn’t exactly turn out as planned.
Perdita isn’t the type of cat that loves hugs or who spends her time napping.
She rather enjoys testing her owner’s mental health by giving them jump scares or by turning up in the most unexpected places- with dark corners being her specialty.
The shelter figured they had to find another way to make Perdita popular among the potential adopters.
They had the original idea of being brutally honest about the cat’s personality, instead of trying to make her look cute in the eyes of the public.
Well, to be honest, you can’t make someone dislike a cat using the words they used in the ad- and it wasn’t their intention in the first place.
They only wanted to create a humorous ad to attract the public’s attention and they succeeded in that!
According to the Rescue’s post on Facebook, when Perdita was first brought to them after her owner’s passing, she looked sick.
The staff was worried about her, but it turned out she was just faking it!
What a cheeky girl- well, they didn’t put it so nicely.
The Rescue staff went on to explain that Perdita loves watching horror movies, and being Queen in her domicile. She hates dogs, the color pink, kittens, and- what a surprise- Christmas! And, guess what! She was brought in the shelter at Christmas!
Also, it was specifically explained that she hates hugs, so she’d be more comfortable- if that is even possible- around an equally anti-social human. One who could respect her personal space and give her the chance to be awkward. Of course, hopefully said person is awkward too – all the better!
Eventually, the humorous ad on the shelter’s Facebook seems to have been a great idea.
After it was posted on social media, the Rescue started receiving dozens of applications to adopt Perdita, while it also resulted in an increase to shelter donations at the time.
It seems that people were able to appreciate the humorous ad, after all.
A few months later, Perdita was adopted, but there are still dozens of other animals in need for you to adopt instead.
It only takes a visit to their Facebook page to get started!
