Devastated shelter dog howls for best friend after they’re separated
Shelter dogs have been through so much in their lives. The uncertainty and anxiety associated with not having a forever home must be so difficult for them.
They will cling to what they can that makes them feel comfortable. This could be a toy, a blanket, or in this case, a wonderful best friend.
The two buddies featured in this story were taken to a shelter together.
They were surrendered by their former owner to the Miami Dade Animal Shelter where they were to be put up for adoption. It was the hope of the shelter staff that both of these sweet pups would find their loving forever families.
They had to be temporarily separated as a result and they were not happy about this. Unfortunately, it appeared that one of the two good friends was going to be adopted, which would leave the other alone in the shelter.
The prospective adopter didn’t show up, however, and the two dogs have now been adopted by the same owner, but their story of how they actually ended up being together is absolutely heartwarming.
These good friends will never have to be apart again.
These friendly dog companions are named Rocky (11 years old) and Schwabo (9 years old). Their owner was having issues with their landlord and had to surrender them to Miami-Dade animal services.
It became very clear when the two were initially separated that they did not want to be split up.
Schwabo was discovered to be limping as a result of arthritis. The team at the shelter decided to put him in another area for observation.
Schwabo cried and cried after he was separated from his friend.
Scared and alone, he stared woefully out the glass window. The shelter volunteers were truly saddened and heartbroken for Schwabo.
“He grew up looking up to Rocky and now, even though he’s older, Rocky is like his big brother,” volunteer Jani Bradford told The Dodo. “He’s very, very attached to Rocky.”
Meanwhile, Rocky was put on the adoption floor.
There was a prospective adopter interested him quickly. Thankfully, the adoption fell through and Rocky and Schwabo were reunited.
The two best friends couldn’t have been happier when they were placed back together. The volunteers at the kennel hoped to be able to find someone willing to adopt both dogs so they would never be separated again.
They posted to Facebook in the hopes of finding just such a person.
“Rocky’s older but he acts like a puppy. He loves playing with the ball, he can play all day long,” Bradford said. “Schwabo acts a little older … He’s very calm, very low maintenance.”
She added, “Schwabo doesn’t do much — he lays in his bed and loves watching Rocky doing all his goofy stuff. Schwabo needs Rocky. He just loves being around him, watching him play all day. Rocky makes him happy.”
Rocky and Schwabo have now moved into the same forever home together.
The two dog companions couldn’t be happier, and neither could those who have been touched by their story.
