The crisis of stray animals is an ever-burgeoning one. Globally, it seems there is no end in sight as pets continuously roam the streets after being carelessly abandoned by their owners. While shelters work diligently to address the issue, their hands are often tied with how much they can do. With limited resources and capacity, there are times it seems the crisis has gotten out of control.

Devastatingly, when some shelters cannot find a home to place the animals into, they turn to the terrible fate of euthanasia.

This has long been an ongoing topic of debate concerning the values of humanity. Euthanizing gives a living being a swift and ‘humane’ death, and it’s a sad and final circumstance for many animals. Some shelters must arrive at this final conclusion in order to make room for additional rescues.

Animal advocates continue to fight for the rights of those who cannot speak for themselves.

Some recommend it only for those too sick to endure a healthier life or those who would put other members at risk. And while many shelters are approaching more progressive life-friendly options, there are still many that turn to this conventional method to keep their shelters afloat.

Our story today concerns two pups who were mere hours away from being euthanized.

Kala and Keira were being stared down by the clock in the most harrowing of ways.

Shelters often have a time-frame before they turn to this method, and for these two their time was drawing ever near.

The dogs had been running mates their entire stay at the Etowah Valley Humane Society in Georgia. They were both transferred there at the same time in 2015 and shared everything together.

Their fate made rounds and some people gathered together to get out the message persuading people to come and rescue them.

The community of Angels Among Us pet rescue caught wind of these sweet pups and were devastated to learn of the terrible news. Unable to take the dogs in themselves, they extended an extra helping hand to locate someone who could temporarily or permanently adopt them.

And this was the miracle that eventually saved them.

The rescuers snapped a shot of the duo in a moment when it mattered the most. In the shelter, Kala wrapped his arms around Keira and their story was shared across social media. They pitched the story with the utmost emotion, with Kala begging for both his life and his best friend’s life.

Readers immediately started to pour in, giving their heart and dedication for the pair.

Heartbroken to learn of their fate, people rushed to share the message. Because of this, the post ended up going viral. It eventually reached a man who hastily made his way to the shelter to rescue them.

Kala and Keira’s story turned into a beautiful happy ending.

The happy pair fell into just the right hands and were given a second chance at life. The man could only foster them temporarily, but eventually found them their new forever family – Pam Cody and Wendy Newman.

Since then, these adorable pups have been able to pursue a happy new life free from danger!
