Frightened dog hugs best friend in shelter and it saves both their lives

Humans have been giving each other hugs for a very long time, usually as a form of comfort.
It seems that one pair of dogs at a kill shelter learned that a hug isn’t just something cute, but a potential way to save lives! Here’s their story.
A kill shelter is a dog pound that euthanizes dogs when they’ve been there for too long.
Homeless dogs are a real problem in many places around the country. Owners release dogs (or they escape) and the dogs end up living on the streets.
Generally, these stray dogs will end up in an animal shelter, hoping to be adopted by someone looking to rescue them. In some animal shelters, however, there is a time limit.
When certain shelters reach capacity, they will euthanize the dogs to make room.
The topic is a tough one to talk about, but in many cases, it’s the only option.
If a dog has been in a shelter for an extremely long time, euthanization is a tool used to give them a swift and peaceful exit, while also allowing other dogs to potentially be adopted.
Many dogs face this fate every day, but these two pups found a way out.
Kala and Keira are two rescue dogs that had been living at the shelter for a long time… and their time was drawing to a close.
Kala and Keira are two dogs who had spent a really long time at the shelter.
Both dogs had spent a lot of time together since being transferred to the Etowah Valley Humane Society (EVHS) way back in 2015. The two stayed in the same kennel together and had become close friends.
Sadly, the time had come for both of the dogs to move on.
As much as the volunteers didn’t want to, the two friends had stayed long enough that it didn’t seem like they were going to be adopted.
In a final cast for hope, a volunteer at the shelter took a photo of the two of them, but right as they went to take it, Kala walked over and decided to hug Keira!
Posting the adorable photo on social media, the result was immediate.
When people heard the story of these two friends and how that was their last day together, they knew what they had to do.
One follower went and began fostering the pups, hoping to find someone to take care of them.
Soon, Kala and Keira found a new home!
Pam Cody and Wendy Newman heard the story of the hugging dogs and knew that it was too perfect. They ended up meeting them and taking them home soon after.
Now, Kala and Keira are living in a home with people who care about them AND a thriving social media community that follows their daily antics!
In this case, a hug really did save a life!
Who would have guessed that the viral moment created by the gentle hug would have saved two lives that day?
Well, we can’t be certain, but maybe Kala and Keira knew all along! Regardless, the two of them now have a home they can call theirs forever.
