Sad shelter dog was ready for another day alone, had no idea his ‘new mom’ was right outside

Each year a little over 3 million dogs are taken in by shelters across the country, according to the ASPCA. A little over 1.5 million of those dogs are adopted into homes with either a new or their former owners. One dog, named Drove, had been waiting for someone to adopt him for six months.

He had grown accustomed to the shelter, the Humane Society of Memphis & Shelby (HSM&S). So, when he settled in for a nap on his favorite spot, a comfy pillow, he had no idea what was about to happen. Unknown to Drove, he was about to be adopted. His new parents were waiting for the pup right outside, as he was soon to learn.

How drove came to the shelter

Drove came to the shelter after he was found tied up in an abandoned house. A five-year-old terrier mix, Drove quickly became a staff favorite.

“One of my favorite things about him is how, if you’re sitting there petting him and you stop, he’ll nudge your hand to get you to keep petting him,” Katie Pemberton, marketing and communications manager at the HSM&S, told The Dodo. “He was definitely a favorite around here, and everyone knew him as a really easy, laid-back dog. Very gentle and sweet.”

The staff was disappointed when Drove was passed over time after time by those looking to adopt an animal. Finally, Morgan and Tyler Hoog decided to pay a visit to the shelter. Morgan’s boxer had recently passed away at 13 years old. After getting married, she and her husband were looking to adopt a dog.

“We were explaining to the front desk that we wanted a dog that would be our best friend and hang out with us all the time,” Morgan said. “We wanted a sweet dog that could be around children. All the humane society employees said that we needed Drove.”

After Morgan and Tyler met Drove, they knew he was the one. Now, all they had to do was fill out the paperwork and wait.

“When I received the call that we could adopt him, I was so happy I was holding back tears.”

Waking up to a new life

Drove had no idea that when he laid down for a nap he would wake up to a life-changing event. He was a little confused at first as the shelter staff brought him out to meet his new family. Renamed Sammy, the dog soon left to move into his new home.

Morgan and Tyler had been looking for an abused dog to adopt. They reasoned that such a dog would truly appreciate the love that they wanted to shower it with. According to Morgan, Sammy was timid upon first arriving at his new home, but has since warmed up to his new mom and dad.

“Since the first night we brought him home, he hates to leave our side,” Morgan said. “If my husband or I get up to grab some water, or leave the room for a second, he follows us to make sure we are not leaving.”

Here is the video of Sammy meeting his new family and leaving the shelter to go live in his forever home.
